Charlie, mind if I ask how exactly do you extend the refuelling drogues in  the VC-10?  ;)

As you can see in the picture below (Victor is the same as the VC 10) you have a hose pod (HDU....pronounced Hudo). It is hydraulically operated and gets it power from the the small propeller on the nose, here though it is covered to stop "you" damaging yourself on it. Basically you have a long hose that is on a drum. It is pulled out by the slipstream, but under braking by the basket on the end. It is hydraulically pulled in. It has to extend a certain length before fuel can flow, but must also be pushed in a certain amount by the receiving aircraft for the flow to flow.

HDU

I am sure Charlie can add to this too.

1. Captain, if the problem is not entered into the technical logbook.........then the aircraft does not have a problem.
2. And, if you have time to write the fault on a napkin and attach to it to the yoke.........you have time to write it in the tech log....see point 1.

You ask the engineer. ;) All the pod and fuselage HDU controls are on his panel.  :)

The only point I would add to Matt's post is that the HDU is the fuselage mounted unit, the wing hose being the wingpods.

Wow guys thanks for all the replies. Just to let you know, I have changed the thread title as many people seem to be posting pictures which is fantastic! So I have just changed the title so other users know they can see some pictures of flightdecks.

Well you get your opportunities, just depends on the occasion.

I have been inside a E3 Sentry (B707), seen inside a Dominie, been inside  a Tutor and Vigilant (with cadets of course) and got a photo of me on a ramp stood up close next to a red arrow... which I saw the inside of.

I think it was an F4 or something, but I have sat in both of its seats... though it was just the cockpit in a museum.

Ive been in two helicopters too... One on a flight around my neighbouring town, Nantwich Vid here and this air rescue helicopter at RAF Waddington.

So yeh, with things like this you do get your opportunities... but thanks to a handful of idiots, we can no longer gain such access unless with very good reasons and probably a large wads worth of proof of identity.
