Some more stuff from the scanned magazine (which I think is now missing, and unfortunately I don't have complete notes for all these pics)...
Stateside photo of an early Lightning.

Golden Eagle served in China, and despite the rough conditions she had her own personal guard. Looks like she's getting another successful ground-attack mission tallied up, there...

Nifty nose art.

The 5000th P-38, which first flew in 1944, was given a special insignia-red paint job and the name "Yippee"... it was flown by Lockheed's small stable of test and demo pilots on a tour of publicity demos and never saw combat. I'm not sure where the name came from or what happened to this ship.

Test pilot Milo Burcham with "Yippee". Somewhere (I hope) I have another mag with nice color photos of this aircraft... it looked great in red.

One of the not-very-well-received Lightnings sold to GB during the war...

And an interesting postwar pic: an RP-322 still bearing its RAF serial number, during an engine test at Newark, NJ Airport in 1946.
Many Lightnings departed Newark for their hop across the Pond during the war; this one probably came back the same way.
