My first flight- Grob Tutor- tomorow morning.

Well tomorow I shall be taking off for my first time in the cockpit of a Grob Tutor at Cosford for an air experience flight.

Hopefully I should be able to take a few moments of control myself, and I am just generally looking forward to the moment- Ive never flown except on a simulator, so it will be a big leap


Anyone have any thoughts, ideas or helpful information for me? I will be updating (hopefully with a few pics) tomorow after the flight... which is 5pm GMT when I get back.

Im nervous, and cant wait, will be a thrill for sure

Well, being a Cpl in the ATC myself, I guess I could say a few things...

As you've probably guessed, AEF flying is / will be brilliant fun!

If it's your first flight they probably won't let you fly any aerobatics, but you will get the chance to take control; steer the plane a bit, climb and descend - general flying really.

Let the pilot you've done a bit of flying on FS and depending on how good you are on FS, let him know! If you know what most of the instruments in front of you do, tell him - partly to impress him and partly to save him the time of running through it all with you

Most of all though - enjoy yourself! (and take your camera up with you! )

mr cpl C21 (hehe)... ill mention it to him- in a way i know enough to get a plane in the air, keep it there and land it (though in practise...) as ive been simming since FS98

our sergeant told us that we are likely to be doing some aerobatics, and of the 14 of us going, about 12 have never been flying before


so yeh, should be lots of fun, and i think ill be right at home inside that cockpit  8-)  ill make sure (s)he knows that im there for business.

well im back... i couldnt take the camera on board as it was too large to fit into the pocket i was given for cameras

but wow, that was a great flight- we took off and went around bits of Telford and Iron Bridge... before going over that mountai which JR Tolkein based lord of the rings on

then i was given control, levelling out at 3000ft before making a bank (trying to maintain 3k ft) to where this old sports stadium was. It was just really fun how i was at the controls of something like an aircraft... was just, well, speechless lol. pulling Gs (around 3-4 i would have said) around a sharp bank was brilliant.

as for some images... they appear to not be on my camera when its plugged in, but they are there on the card. ill get the program for my camera.





though i only got 25 minutes of flight in my 3822 (record of service booklet) the flight itself felt like it lasted twice as long.

Charlie... i smile every time i think of sitting there in my gloves, flying suit and helmet.

i should even be getting a flying lesson for my 15th birthday in february, and im saving up to get pilots license tuition for when i can (16/17)


... i think im addicted, and its not hard to tell why (unless the person reading never been, in which case you are more than missing out)

Pffttt.... wait until you go gliding...! it may not have an engine, but its proper flying... and a whole lot more of a fun experience... If you ever happen to go gliding at RAF Syerston next year i'll see if i can take you up... just you and me!

hey Luke, nice proposal... though i think we only go to Cosford to do flying... and sometimes RAF 100 for chances in hawks.... but if we do ever go to Syerston ill give you a PM  ;)

I think gliding is a little more scary, as if you miscalculate the weather, or the distance to the runway then you can end up in a bit of bother


Rotty... i sure hope so, and to be honest i was checking out the prices on some certain aircraft that i wouldnt mind buying in the future. just need something that can do a few tricks and is side by side.. though a little more powerful than the tutor. modded extra 300L anyone?

It's a shame for Air Cadet flying the Tutor can't be flown to its full potential, being limited to more sedate aerobatics. Having said that it would be nice to have an extra 20hp or so.

well, the more times you fly, the more tricks you can do... i was only allowed to do a few G turns... but if you go again then you can do proper aerobatics like rolls and loops etc


for a second i thought you where talking about an Extra '20Hp' as a type of plane, but realised you were talking respectively of the tutor lol


hmm, something like a Diamond katana series aircraft would be nice... if i get something like

Sadly the "rule book" limits what can be done (flick manouvres, spinning etc are prohibited carrying cadets...)
