Just seen this - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/sout ... 998863.stm

Turns out he was just standing in due to a shortage in pilots.  :-[

There's a link to a video clip of Brian talking about flying on the BBC News page.

They fail to point out that he's shown flying the actual aircraft involved in the accident, I suppose it would have diluted the whole 'stand-in' angle of the news story  ::)

Seemed like a nice guy

What an absolute load of rubbish. As Doug says he'd been flying G-HURR for several years and was probably the most experienced Hurricane pilot in the world today. The aircraft was sold by the RACo last year, but being operated from Area 51 at Duxford. With the size of the formation involved it is entirely conceivable he was brought in, but to call him a "stand in" is utter bull-poo.

The BBC are becoming less worthy of the license fee every day. They've already had one formal complaint from me this weekend about their coverage of this incident.

Man what a horrible freak accident.  My prayers are with the pilot's friends and family.

What failed in the aircraft?  Do they know yet?

I agree with you there.

I happened to be changing my camera battery at the time so I didn't see the events leading up to it. When I looked up I saw what I at first thought was a model Hurricane diving vertically into the hillside north of the A27 before disappearing behind the crest of the hill. I half expected it to come zooming up towards me but in my heart I knew the awful truth. Although it was happening almost in slow-motion it was obvious to me that nobody could survive that impact even before the plume of smoke appeared some time afterwards. Despite their claims to the contrary I'm fairly certain that the majority of spectators were blissfully unaware of anything unusual until they were told over the PA system. However tragic this might be I feel that it was very lucky that nobody else was hurt. There were a lot of spectators on that hillside.

Exactly the same as me, I was changing my memory card and looked up to see the Hurricane plummeting. Many thought it was part of the display but i knew what had happened.  :-[

Apparently video footage of the plane going down was shown on the meridian news, very insensitive to show at this stage in my opinion.   >:(
