Hurricane crash

Sadly it appears a Hurricane (*Tom Blairs BD707, formerly the RAC's black Hurricane) has crashed at Shoreham this afternoon. No news, but very little hope for the pilot.

Very sad news indeed.

Often the best thing to do - the last thing you want is several thousand people all wanting to leave in short order, particularly with the "rubber necking" element to consider too...

The show must go on. These pilots know the risks but they still do that 'job' because they love it so much (and who can blame them). None of them would want the show to halt on their account, they're best remembered by dedicating the rest of the show to them. They did that at Duxford in 2003 after the Firefly went down, and it meant so much. A tragic loss of human life. :-/

I saw it go down....was very shocking....

It was during the mock airfield attack and was dogfighting with the Buchon I believe.....it was heading round the front of the airfield about a mile out when it suddenly dropped from the air....it almost looked like a controlled stall, but then it disappeared behind a hill, and a few seconds later smoke started to rise from the position....many people thought it was still part of the act....but it was confirmed that it had gone down over the speakers a minute later and the police helicopter and fire engines were put into action....

The show had to go on....as the commentator said, the pilot would have wanted that...the 6 spitfires carrying out a missing man seemed a fitting tribute....

Taxying out for it's final display...RIP....

Very sad news indeed. :-/ There seems to be an unusually high rate of crashes this year. Has there become a shortage of top-notch people in the vintage and performance aircraft proffesion? Or is this all just a coincidence?

The pilot has now been named in the press as Brian Brown (further to his name appearing on one or two forums last night).

Some of you will know he was the General Manager of the Real Aeroplane Co. at Breighton in Yorkshire, who were the Hurricane's previous operators (as well as the Buchon) before it was sold to Tom Blair last year. He'd been flying the Hurricane for several years, and as such was a very experienced operator of the type.

A fine aviator, who in his role with RACo helped transform Breighton into a real gem in the north of England.

I was there, it was horrible... I, like mic, have a photo of the Hurricane taxiing past me only a few moments before the crash.  :-[

I've never had to witness a crash before and i hope I never have to again. I was quite shaken by the crash but still went in on Sunday out of respect to the pilot (The whole day was dedicated to him I believe). One of the most saddening things was the sound of the commentator struggling to hold it together, i myself was close to tears...
