What about the Air France A340 crash in Canada?
As far as I know, noone died in the crash, despite the aircraft were on fire!
I still maintain the opinion that they shouldn't have landed in the first place. :)
I think you are both referring to Air France flight 358, which overran the runway Toronto Pearson International Airport (ICAO: CYYZ) while trying to land during poor weather conditions. I think Nexus may have a point in that this may have been a situation where the pilots would have been wise to go around (hindsight being 20/20, of course).
However, Theis has a good point, as well. The aircraft did catch fire after crashing. But, the crew and passengers were able to safely evacuate with only minor injuries. Certainly, the nature of the crash contributes to the nature of injuries received. But, low speed/low deceleration (relatively speaking, of course) crash aside, that everyone evacuated as intended during just such a situation shows that there must have been some level heads prevailing. Not all evacuations go as well. The evacuation of Air France flight 358 does show a good emergency response indeed.
