I believe there was one flight where two jets (one of them a cargo jet and one a passenger jet) colided into each other over Germany killing a bunch of people but I forget what flight that was. I certainly believe that 9/11 was the worst though even though it wasn't an accident.

The worst air disaster I can imagine is one where I'm aboard one of the aircraft.
No, seriously.

Still a grim conversation, don't you thing?

No.

Why shouldn't this kind of topic be discussed?

I don't have a problem discussing actual events, that may help someone's understanding. I do find it curious that we should try to imagine the worst possible air disaster, as it is always possible to imagine something worse.

i.e. two planes collide.....two planes collide, each carrying 300 nuns....two planes collide carrying each carrying 300 nuns and the wreckage falls 20000 feet and destroys an orphanage, full of orphaned children in an eastern european former Soviet state who had just been told that they were all going to be adopted by Bill Gates and were going to live with him on a Caribbean island and who were all deliriously happy and drinking coke for the first time until they were crushed and burned to death by 600 falling nuns and two Boeing 747's

Ultimately it's pointless, people die in a very unpleasant way, it's ghoulish to imagine ways in which it could be even more tragic or painful. Reality is sufficiently tragic without trying to make it worse.....

You can't argue that this is a cheery conversation.  Im not saying this conversation shouldn't happen.  Remember, we are all aviation enthusiasts in one way or another.  Why would we ever want to even think about such a horrible thing occuring to something that we care about so much.  Its almost like thinking of what would be the most painful way for your best friend to die.

For giving our imagination some short-term excercise.

Its almost like thinking of what would be the most painful way for your best friend to die.

Being the brave noobling that I am, I offer my two cents (which at current market value are worth less than the metal they are made of . . . sigh):

I did find the whole idea of imagining air disasters that have not even happened to be a bit macabre, even depressingly so.  On the other hand, I can think of various reasons why someone might feel inclined to talk about such things.  For some people, facing fears is a cathartic experience allowing them to do that which they might otherwise be incapable of doing (like boarding a plane sober).  Other people might find the distraction of thinking about imaginary woes a more palatable option than thinking about real woes.  So, while I am disinclined at this time to join in the creation of disasters that have not even happened, I do understand there may be very valid reasons, however macabre it may seem to the rest of us, for people to talk about such things.

If you do find the talk of horrible disasters too grim for your taste, perhaps you may want to check out my thread on Best Emergency Responses, here: http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2 ... 1184934792 .  I think there is probably enough room on the forums for conversations that cater to either persuasion on this issue, so long as we remember to be respectful, play nice, and not try this at home.  ;)

How about an A380 fully loaded flying over the yellow sea mid airs a American B-52 loaded with nukes. As the wreckage of the 2 planes falls from 35,000 feet, it hits a Supersonic Tu-22 also loaded with nukes. The combined nukes of the B-2 and Tu-22 scatter across the yellow sea, some land in South Korea, North Korea, China, and Russia. The Russians think the Americans did it, the Americans think the Chinese did it, and the Chinese think the Russians did it, and The Koreas think "Damn, we're screwed..." All hell breaks loose and everyone blows every one else out of the water. And India takes it's place as the sole world superpower.

Highly unplauseable, but the worst I can think of. (except for the Indian Superpower part) ;D

Oh, I don't think you can call 9/11 an "Aviation Accident".... It reall wasn't an accident....

There is no real "worst air disaster" all air disasters are bad in there own way, even tho people say "This is the worst air disaster ever" they mainly say it by the amount of people who were killed and the amount of damage done to the surrounding area. Its not about how many people were killed or injured or about the state or plane or the areas around the crash site, all air crashes are the same and they all turn out basicaly the same way.

P.S If you want to learn more about the two plane collision crash it is on NatG (National Geographic Channel - Sky 526) on Wednesday at 22:00PM GMT.
