Chrysler Turbine

Chrysler Turbine

I have never heard of an everyday car powered by a turbine engine before but it turns out there was one, but do to the cost to re-tool all the factories/auto garages.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5IF0VbUb_Ug

I read an article only a few months ago about these cars, it was about how some of the sales guys had to drive them around from state to state to show dealers & test them etc. Sounded like an awsome job. If I can find the article I'll scan it for you.

I remember seeing the Rover Jet 1 back in 1951, probably at the Festival of Britain. I believe this was the first car in the World powered by a gas turbine. Not surprising as the Rover Car Co produced Sir Frank Whittle's early gas turbines before Rolls-Royce took over the development.
Jet 1 achieved a top speed of 152mph at Jabbeke, Belgium in 1952. It is now on display at the Science Museum at South Kensington. http://www.rover.org.nz/pages/jet/jet5.htm

There was even a plastic model kit of the Chrysler turbine back in the day. They show up on eBay from to time. Also a turbine powered Ford concept, F-1 car, two Indy car designs, and a coal-powered turbine was under develepment by GM. Andy Granatelli of Indy 500 fame also built a turbine powered corvette. The hurdle that was never overcome was the gas-guzzling nature of turbines.

Or the fact that the exhaust tended to melt the car behind when stood at the traffic lights ;D
