Mike, first of all, I'll just confirm everything that has been said before about the OrbX scenery packages. I'm a proud owner of the PNW scenery, which covers all the region around Seattle, and I love it.
You do NOT need to reinstall your FSX to install the FTX sceneries, not at all.FTX sceneries have no impact on other sceneries and other sceneries have no impact on FTX sceneries. The only thing you must be carefull about is the utility FTX Central (which is installed with any OrbX product). When you want to fly over a FTX area, then you have to go into the FTX Central tool prior to launching FSX, and ensure that the area is "activated" (you can switch between the areas and "default FSX"). This is because the FTX products are going to change some things relative to the autogen and landclass systems, so if you intend to fly out of the FTX area, then you should switch back to "default FSX" in the FTX Central tool first. That's all.
Also, on the OrbX website, I would strongly recommend you to download and install the freeware PNW demo that covers all of the Olympic peninsula southwest of Seattle, and includes the Bowermann airfield. It will give you a nice preview of what the region is going to look like in the full package.
Carefull with some airports: some of the like Concrete, Darrigton, Orcas Island etc... are also separate payware products, that can be installed on top of PNW. These paywares look simply fantastic ! However, in the PNW package, they are already there, in a much more basic form of course (much less detailled than the payware versions).... basic, but not basic like a default FSX airfield. These "basic" version that are included in the PNW pack are already using quite a nice surrounding landclass, as well as a wide bunch of scenery objects like airplanes, grass, buildings hangars etc... Which means the basic versions of these airports are already looking quite good.
On the GTX forums, somewhere you can find a Google Earth ".KMZ" file which shows the precise coverage of all the various FTX products.
