Paying for Membership

Postby Tchkinjiu » Wed Jul 09, 2003 4:24 pm

This topic will be moved soon enough, so I'll be quick.
I just had to share this about the people who want you to pay for their membership.
Basically, they want you to pay for freeware. In almost every plane pack, there a notepad that says, this plane is not for sale, and can not get a profit off of. That what all of these guys are pretty much doing. I know that the websites have all of the planes, but still....
Simviation is the only website I have seen that doesn't want you to pay for membership!
Thanks Simviation!!

One of so many countless reasons that Hyperion Airways flies the banner which reads:

We proudly support Simviation.com

;D

On one note... Simviation has been considering a membership program. However, it will not preclude visitors from downloading aircraft, etc. or even limit the number of guests that can access the site at any given time.

Which is exactly the way that it should be.

Give people a choice.

You are right Hyperion, the people should have a choice... I would gladly pay money for those extra features for the simple fact that it would benefit everyone and not just me.  I know that everyone here at least once has experienced a problem with getting in right away (site slow to respond) but with extra bandwith (funded by members), it would be a lot easier for those less fortunate to get in quickly.

yeah, its very expensive to pay for a website, especially when you got thousands of downloads on it. But of course with the orignal topic, it sort of is a good point but if the developer uploads their work to the site then they wouls obviously know about the membership and all. I actually find Flightsim pretty quick when loading pages (Non-membership). Its easy to get in at round 7 eastern. And you also gotta think of the prizes Flightsim gives out. membership pays so you can get all this stuff. As a consumer we may not like it, but what can we do.

That is Od Oz (maybe you outta change your name to that... j/k! LOL), I always seem to have a hell of a time getting in (unless it is 1:00am PST/4:00am EST). When there are site sponsors, they generally don't have a problem giving goodies because it just more promotion for them, and they get to write it off as business expense when they file taxes (they loose nothing).

Ya, I tend to have the same problem too. Sometimes when trying to get in, it just doesn't wanna load. Get a little impatient!  ;)
Oh well, I know I'll get in sooner or later

The pay for use argument isn't going to go away.  I'm perfectly happy with things as they stand.  I get my downloads etc from here because it is free and as I can get all I need from here I'm not going to pay a penny to join another site.  If the site is costing Pete money to run so that I can download for free I personally would be happy to pay a small fee for membership to continue the existance of the site.  This is not an attempt to become a sychophant it is simply the principle of equity, it is not fair or equitable for one person to pay so that others can receive downloads for free.

If this doesn't make sense I apologise but it is four AM here and I'm beginning to feel a little drowsy.

I have never paid for a membership to any kind of web site, but if Pete started a membership program here I would.  That alone should tell you something.   Nuff said about that...

the tip around Flightsim is to hit F5 until you get in.

The benefit of membership to some sites is worth it, fast downloads, no pop ups. But when freeware sites like FSFreeware.com start given you the run around and say all servers are busy all the time and pop you up to a membeship board that's the time I stop DLing from them.

3 good sites is all you should really need for freeware.

Just let people donate to the "CAUSE".

But make sure that a dollar amount donated is shown next to my name to shame others in to donating.

Next to peoples names that havn't donated it should say " X Number of files downloaded and hasn't donated yet" or something to that effect.

Put that info right next to the number of posts.

As soon as that happens my check will be in the mail to Pete. :)
