No VORs at military bases?

Postby WebbPA » Thu Jun 10, 2004 10:05 pm

I just noticed that the VORs at military bases don't work.

I was flying towards China Lake (California) NAS.  The VOR freq is 117.3 and the range is 195 miles.  My DME picked up the beacon but I couldn't NAV to it and I couldn't hear the morse code.

Curious, I tried the same thing at MacDill AFB (Tampa, FL) with the same results.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Most mil VORs are TACAN. MS never worked this out. There are some that work tho, you'll have to just imagine that budgetary controls have knocked out the facility until payday  ;D

Hi!
What was your altitude?
VOR works as a cone.....5000 ft 60 NM,10000 ft 120 NM etc etc!  ;)
And aslo look when you make the flight plan....,as Logjam told you,Tacan are closed for civilians!  >:(
Cheers!
Thank God for let me fly!

My altitude was fine because I flew right over them.  I think logjam's answer is right, and it makes this article make a little more sense http://www.flightsim.com/cgi/kds?$=main/howto/tacan.htm

Yeah, they're TACAN. But, also, who in their right minds would file a flightplan through a MIL base? Scare the crap out of the passengers, see an F-18 screaming by to intercept it... ;) ;D
