INSTALLING Schleicher ASW28

Postby E3APilot » Wed Feb 18, 2004 11:14 am

Downloaded ASW28.zip to My Documents\ Downloads\ Compressed, and created new folder C:\Program Files\DAP(2).  Then extracted zipped files to DAP(2) as follows. DAP(2)\FS2002\Aircraft,Effects,Gauges,Modules
plus Gps-nav.dat, GPSNAV.max,GPSNAV.TGT, LNAV_polar.dat, LNAV_polarlist.dat and LNAV.MAX. The 'Aircraft' folder contains folder 'ASW28' and ASW28 contains 5 folders : model, panel, panel.bal, sound, and texture.  I think ASW28 is the folder that should be dragged to 'aircraft' in MS Games FS2002 but what to do with Effects,Gauges, Modules and the data files? Please assist.  Many thanks.

This is designed so you would have just unzipped to the FS2002 directory and it woulda done the work for you. Put the ASW28 folder in Aircraft, all the files in the effects folder in the FS2002 effects folder, gauges in the FS2002 gauges folder, etc. etc. Hope this helps!

It was configured that way but this is not a good idea. I would urge you never to unzip files direct to FS2002. This is the quickest way to disaster I know.

With aircraft configured like this installation couldn't be easier. Simply open the Aircraft, Effects, Gauges & Modules folders & paste the contents into the same named folders in FS. Unless you know what you're doing it's best not to overwite files/folders if prompted, especially in the Gauges folder. I think the data files you mention are text files for your information only.

Sorry if it came out wrong. I agree with you FULLY. NEVER do this. Even if the file says to do it. It can overwrite potentially necessary files, and will leave your FS2002 directory full of Readme.txts and freakin' copyright notices. Good God, we know already. Don't sell the freakin' planes. :P

Everything works well after I followed Hagar's recommendations except that the GPS-NAV and the L-NAV instruments are dead.  I am pretty sure that this is because I did not know where to install the data files.  I am trying to get in touch with Peter Franke who wrote the program for enlightenment!
Thanks once again for help already given.

Maybe you didn't install the gauges correctly. Most downloads come with install instructions these days. One way to find out is to try it myself. I'll do this later.

OK I now have the file. From the way it's configured I guessed that those 6 "dat" files belong in the FS2002 main directory folder. This turned out to be correct.

I assume you spotted this in Readme txt.
NOTE: To prevent an error from appearing when you start FS, you must add these lines to your FS2002.cfg file:

     [OLDMODULES]
     SOARRec.dll=1

This is one of the few downloads I've come across that it would be quite safe to extract direct to the sim. This would depend on the method you use to extract files. It's always much safer to extract downloaded zipfiles to a Temp folder first & install the files manually. IMHO

Great stuff from Prof Hagar!!  Yes, I did spot the cure, and added the lines to the .cfg file which did the trick.  I will drag the data files to the main directory and get the Nav system working.  Best regards and thanks.
