anti-aliasing?

Postby EricK » Thu Jun 12, 2003 11:41 am

Hi there,

I have been able to get everything set up just about perfectly. My only problem is anti-aliasing. It is an option that I would dearly like to turn on but for some reason it screws up my regular cockpit view. Only the panel becomes distorted. It becomes what looks like just primary colors. Big spots and a uniform pattern. The outside is fine and all other views including VC are fine.

All of my sliders are maxed out, but it doesn't make a difference whether they are at max or right down at minimum. The only option that causes this is anti-aliasing. For the first few seconds of a flight it may or may not happen but it definately happens if I use the atc box. The area directly under the semi-transparent ATC box remains unaffected. I can make it go away my turning and banking the aircraft, it seems to jar itself back to normal. I can bring the problem back by making any addional actions (ex-GPS, change view, change back, pause, return, etc.)

My machine is a 1.7g processor, 384mg ram, GForce 64mg video card and a 17" monitor set at 1024x768 with 32bit true color.

I have tried changing the color to 16bit (nothing) I have changed the settings to every possible combination (nothing). I know I am being picky because everything works great without anti-aliasing turned on but it really minimizes my jaggies and I would love to know what to do to be able to keep it on???

Thanks
Eric

Does this happen with all 2d panels or just one?  Have you tinkered with the settings on your video card?  Would it be possible to turn AA off in FS but adjust the parameters with your card and let the card manage AA?

This is what I do is let the card manage the AA and it seems to make everything work and look fine.

Exactly which Gforce card are you running, and with which driver set?
Also do you have directX 9.0?

Thank you everyone for getting back to me.

To answer the first response. No, I have not tried turning off AA and running it using my graphix card, I will try that first.

To answer the second, it is a Geforce 4mx 440 (PCI) 64mb - I am not great with tech stuff so that's what it says on the box. As far as directX, unless it came with the new graphix card, I have never installed it. If you think its a good idea, I will.

Lastly, I do run the screen in 1024 x 768 x 32. I have tried it in 16 and it has the same effect.

Thanks again for all your input. I will try these solutions and any more input would be appreciated.

Thanks
Eric

A huge thank you to codered, ozzy, and sim_man.

All of your responses helped me to fix my problem and get a good night's sleep for the first time in 2 days!!

The suggestion to use my graphix card to control AA worked perfectly. (As I said I am not very proficient with tech stuff, I didn't realize I could manipulate the settings of a graphix card!) I selected full anti-aliasing and also ticked the box called texture sharpening. The effect was tremendous!

Sim_man's suggestion to use the other setting made me realize I only had the desktop set to 32bit but the game was set to 16bit, again an improvement.

Thank you everyone, I mean it!!!!!

I have the exact same video card and running XP (home).... and have the exact same issues when I try turning anti-ailasing on.  The machine however is a 2.4 G Pentium 4.

I'll have to expreiment.  Thanks for bringing this up.
