instriment landing system.
It is used to assist aircraft on their final approach to the runway.
On approach using your auto pilot, click the "APR" button.
You must have the ILS freq. dialed in on your nav radio.
I believe thats pretty much it

There are plenty of ILS tutorials, including here -- go to the home page, click "help" and you'll see a tutorial listed. ILS is rather tricky and takes a lot of practice, I've found.

:Flying the ILS isnt too hard once you get it down - but what I cant figure out is once you have the frequency, load it into your nav radio - and turn it on - how come it never works??

So anyway- thats the only difficult part I can figure.

Make sure your GPS/NAV switch is set to NAV, and don't forget to keep Autopilot, Autothrottles, and Altitude Hold selected. The Alt Hold will automatically disengage when it catches the glideslope to bring you down to the runway.

Do you have to be making a IFR landing or does it work with VFR? ??? I have microsorf flight simulator 2000 and it has a vidio on how to use the localizer with a little one in the corner but i cant get the thing to show up is it a guage or do you have to use your radio?

ILS landings can be made under IFR or VFR, it doesn't matter. The way you go about it is to find the ILS frequency of the runway you want to land at (this is usually done by going into map view and clicking on an airport, scrolling down all the info, until you find something like "Runway 22 108.10" and various other bits and pieces), and then putting that frequency (in this case, 108.10) into your NAV1 radio. As you get closer to the airport, you'll get info regarding glideslope and the like on your HSI.

Also check out http://www.simviation.com/files/1misc/ILSTUTORIAL.zip . It's a tutorial on how to use the ILS to land the plane. If you've any questions, just ask.
