Paul, I am a "percussionist". I play timpani and marimba as well. I can read music quite well actually.
Talking about reading music, you must use a different music "score" to play your "DRUM" percussion instruments...!

Well, marimba, xylophone, bells, chimes, and glockenspiel is in treble clef.. timpani is in bass clef, as well as other non-keyboard percussion parts. I'm not sure why though. "Drum" music is just rhythm.
I gotcha Paul. This is a scan of one of the songs I'm currently performing in the pit orchestra for our school's rendition of "Brigadoon".
It's different for most scores. In this case, it's written for the bass drum on the lower line, with the snare and cymbal up higher on the staff.

It's easier for you just to see it, I think.
..by the way, one guy playing six instruments for this play is tough! Real tough!![]()

...how Violinists, Cellists, Double Bass players, etc, manage to calculate exactly whereabouts they are on the fretboard to obtain the note they require, is quite beyond my comprehension.
