Over here, in Great Britain, the majority of such cables and equipment are located/buried underground, and out of sight, out of mind....invisible!!
Take Tornado Valley, as a typical example. All the power lines, etc, are located overhead, and always liable to damage due to violent Storms, and suffer expensive power outages, resulting in enormous cost to repair and get back on-line again!
