The tower seemed a little confused by this unusual traffic, but granted him permission to join. When the instructor had lined up on the final leg, tower asked: "Alpha Zulu Tango, would you like the vectors for the runway, or would you like to follow the Airbus A340 in front of you in?" Now the Airbus was much faster then the 172, but the instructor announced that he would follow the Airbus until he had visual of the runway. Eventually the Airbus landed and cleared the runway and the tower came on: "Alpha Zulu Tango, You are cleared to land full stop runway 33R. do you have a visual of the runway?" "Cleared to land 33R, confirmed runway in sight".
Now a little side not to all of those unfamiliar to the airport CYYZ, it currently has one of the highest landing and takeoff fees in the world (actually it may be THE highest) at 15000 CND to use the runway. Now this instructor took his sweet time in getting the plane to the runway, holding 65kts for a long while. Eventually, he crossed the runway and started to flare. He held the plane off the runway for as long as possible and when he was about 2 feet or so off the ground, then with a few quick moves, power went to full, carb heat went cold and flaps came up. He then announced to tower that he was going around and wished to depart the circuit. The tower controller seemed quite angry but allowed him to tune departure and leave the circuit. They had managed to avoid the 30000 dollars to land and takeoff and the pair howled with laughter as my friend retook control to fly back to their base.
