Fun times with scammers

Postby Steve M » Thu Oct 11, 2012 6:16 pm

I've had several calls from India telling me there is a problem with windows and this person has the fix. The latest caller I got had a steep Indian accent and introduced himself as Pierre. I had a blast for the next 20 minutes including asking him to spell his name. (Not even close)!

It's 43+ minutes, but if your bored it's fun to listen to.

It had me in absolute stitches!... ;D... ;D... ;D...!

It was so cleverly done, especially with an American accent appearing serious, with the fantastic dial-up tones!
It was the biggest wind-up in the history of Indian Trolls...

Wonderful stuff...!!

Paul... ;D... ;D... ;D...!

p.S...I couldn't help it..I HAD to listen to it right to the end... ;D... ;D... ;D...!

There's been a run of adverts on local TV stations for "Fix your computer" stuff", call them scams if you like, but wide open on TV so I guess they're legal, but still targeting those who don't really know much about tech.  One advertised result was something like, "Now my computer runs twice as fast!" or something like that.

These adverts are still running, I see them regularly.

Apex, those are probably local computer firms and it is legit. What we're talking about is cold calling from scammers trying to get money out of you by pretending your computer has a virus and they'll fix it for a fee.

Listening to that, I was reminded of my old Modem Dial-up ring tones...
...and thought I would change my Windows 7; "Start-up sound" to the Dial-up tone (just for fun)*...but it cant be done on Win 7..(easily)...:'(... (it can done on the older versions..'98 and XP). Microsoft has prevented it from being changed to something else on Win 7!
...bugger... :(...
I have fond/masochistic memories of Modem dial-up tones, and 2-hour connection limits.... ;D...!

Paul...give me a ring sometime... ;)...!

If I EVER get a call such as that, I will proceed to tell the caller that their wife has a virus and I will be glad to make a house call to make her run faster. ;) :D

I/we get them all through the day here in England, from Call Centres, etc...
Every time I pick up my 'phone you can bet your boots there is one of them on the other end of the line!
I pick up the 'phone, and wait for them to respond FIRST, if its one of "them", I don't reply, and just wait for them to cancel the call.
I can always recognise my own family (voice) when they call me!

Paul...Land-Line Phone only... 8-)...!
