Conspiracy theory? Is Google really 'Big Brother'?

Postby Bud Greene » Thu May 10, 2012 1:34 pm

I just happened to be fooling around with Google Maps the other day and upon looking in the satellite view of my apartment complex I saw clearly my car!  I am certain this is nothing unusual but it certainly is a little unnerving.  Anyone else get a weird feeling when your belongings are visible from space?

yep!!!  Makes me wonder if Google has access to that kind of tech, who else has access to other far superior levels of definition :-?

No .... But Facebook can become that if you let it.

Google knows what you search - ... & a few other things ... BUT

Facebook -- much more to be concerned about.

Idiots provide FB with masses of personal info.

Big Brother wears a business suit, no doubt in my mind about that. Look at the current legislation in the USA to stop corporations from demanding social network information and passwords from job applicants and employees. Hope it passes. Only the rule-of-law and regulation will stop corporations from abusing your personal information (and making a quick buck in doing so). It's the corporations, stupi... my friends.

Satellite view is a misnomer. The detailed views in Google Maps are actually taken from aircraft at low level.

Right about Facebook, more to be concerned with there.

Odd that nobody's mentioned Google Maps Street View. That can be far more intrusive than aerial photos.

That doesn't make me feel any less weirded-out.

I lucked out on Street View.  Not available for the 'street' I live on (an apartment complex parking lot) but I have a friend to whom this occurred.

I find Google Earth, Maps and street view an extremely useful set of tools - especially for navigating. Enhanced my life enormously and made my sat nav redundant.

I love Google Street View....

...in conjunction with my Flight Sims, I explore the Google World, from the air in my aircraft...and on the ground by foot...

...from the densest Cities to the remotest mountains and deserts...

...and get all the local details via Wikipedia!

Wonderful, for the intrepid explorer...Me!... :)...!

I don't worry about it too much.  Just remember the photos can be anywhere from a few months to a few years old.  Its not like someone could case your house and wait for you to leave.  It would be far easier to just drive by and have a look whenever you want.

I was in one of the photos on street view in Long Beach, CA for a while. They update the images and blur out faces though.

If someone was going to stalk you, it's a bad method (unless you literally hang your ass out the window as the van goes by)
