Most people pronounce it Nu Or leens. But people who live there, and some more of us, ::)

pronounce it nu' aulins, with the accent on au.

[quote]Not a city, but Arkansas (Ar-can-saw) always confused me.

From the Mexican, Los Angeles should be 'los an-jhel-es'... (The Angels), but Los An-gee-lees is my personal pronunciation.

Of course, most spellings have been skewed by the horrificness that is American-English. I just refer to it as 'American' as I don't want to put my language to its name

Here in the state of Missouri we have a little town called Nevada. Unlike the state of Nevada (pronounced "Nah-vah-dah") people pronounce the name of the town "Nah-vay-dah". I've always been puzzled by this. :-?

Nevada.

Its the pronunciation of the middle letter; "a"...
Certain letters are emphasized in the US...

Tomato.

In the US its; "Toe-may-toe".
Over here its; "Toe-mar-toe".

Paul... 8-)...!

"Arkansas" is a always confusing for me. (I always get it wrong)... ;D...!
Mind you...The small market town of; "Leominster", 12 miles from me, is correctly? pronounced; "Lempster", locally...
Outsiders always get that one wrong!... ;D...!

There's a strange reverse: we long ago began ignoring our "r" in arse but you stick yours where it shouldn't be.

"Arkansas" is always confusing for me. (I always get it wrong)!
[color=#003300]Unlike you, aside for the occasional possessive, we pronounce an "s" as an "ss" -- so it's pronounced Are-can-saw because it sounds rude to stick an a...

We have no problem with the pronunciation of ass, so common the world over. It seems our problem is that you swiped the r from behind our backs and stuffed it into a tomato... you didn't just tax our tea, you taxed our words -- no wonder we had a revolution!

Toe-may-toe/Toe-mar-toe
At least we both devour the same Po(pe)-tay-toe!
Wait a moment... now you're really being confusing. I was about to tell any England-bound travellers that it's tomarto and potarto... and what's the (pe)?
Hey, we can't devour the same potato.. I'll have mine and you'll have yours... no, I guess you can't... you gave it to your pet... or the Pope.

Mayor's announcement; "We have a mass of Chew Sets"!
The name means something to the effect of "in/near the hills" and was applied to the Natives of the environs, then to the bay formed by the east and northward hook of land; it  was then applied to the colony (then including what is now Maine).
Through the time of the American Revolution, Massachusetts and New Hampshire colonials were quite mutually supportive (the late arrival of a contingent of NH militia held off the assailing British while the original, now ammunitionless, defenders retreated from the Battle of Bunker [Breed's] Hill). More recent wanderings and immigration of certain Mass (now sometimes suffixed by another word for pits) residents (the former ignoring many of our laws or simply taking advantage of our courtesies, the latter moving in and changing them) has caused alternate renderings of the name. For instance, Mass-a-cheese-its (probably an application in meaning borrowed from the old Dutch term from which comes Yankee, as well as the little square crackers) and Mass/Mess-a-[original Anglo-Saxon for multiple organic refuse].
