Real world weather and fuel calculations made it a bit nerve racking if I flew into a storm where I was supposed to land with 10% fuel remaining and the next nearest airport was 100 miles away.

A virtual world tour... I am doing something like that myself right now... for the fifth time in as many sims (first one I did in FS98, then FS2002, then FS9, then X-plane 9, and now AGAIN in FS9, but only using prop planes and visiting as many countries in the world as possible... a loooong tour this will be)... though lately I've had to suspend it because of other matters and left it a little hanging... but I intend to take it up again ASAP. :)

Have found, as a prop plane, that the Wings of Power P-51 Mustang (if you care to use a payware) is the right kind of horse (pardon the pun) for much of the travel. Fast, powerful, flexible, lots of range to allow for over-water long distance, and is damn cool looking as well. A little tricky in the handling, especially with the center tank full, but as long you don't require aerobatics and treat it with respect, it will reward you. :D

For some sections of the mostly already mapped flight it may be a little too much to handle, like when landing in some REALLY short strips in the Himalaya, the Andes, the Caribbean and some other places, but in those cases I've resolved to leave it behind and rent some sort of a as yet still to define STOL plane for a while, and then once back take the Mustang up again. :)

There is no such a thing as overkill. Only unworthy targets.

Well the main problem is getting through the two voids

Getting basic airport scenery for russia and/or china will make planning a lot easier. Even thoug they are small, there are some remote airfields on the russian coast between kamchatka and provideniya bay which ms forgot.

For china, even when you dont count the military stuff, there are about 5 times more civil airports there when using addon scenery
Russian planes: IL-76 (all standard length ones),  Tu-154 and Il-62, Tu-134 and An-24RV[/ur
