I am in college for #7.. and if your looking for a shortcut.. GOOD LUCK. All though the FAA is hiring off the street, its only a couple hundred a year and thousands apply.  All though you CAN skip college for it, the chances of actually doing it is slim.

Even if you do get selected I know people who are in the process.. and it takes around a year from application to a class date for the school in Oaklahoma.

Other then the military, College is the best way to get in.  8-)

Way back in the last days of the Low Freq Ranges, when I became a #7, it was a simple transfer from one agency to another - Weather Bureau to FAA - so I essentially had the experience level of an 'off the street' hire.

I never liked to go to school so I dropped out at the age of 17. Got a job as a assistant engineer (mind you, I never had any mechanical or electric education) at a big railroad contractor. Learned the trade 'on the go'. Now little more than 20 years later I'm a head engineer at the same company. Leading a team of 5 engineers/mechanics.

Carlo ;)

I never quite got what American college was. Over here you'd probably have to go to college for most of those jobs.

hotjobs.yahoo.com??
Cue Sarcasm
I can't tell you the number of "best jobs to get into" articles I've seen over the last several years, but I can tell you they're a dime a dozen.

Last one I saw said teachers and nurses were high on the list.
Really?
Let's see - school districts cutting their budgets, yep, teachers get the pink slip.
Nurses? Saw an article titled "Nursing a safe bet? Guess again. Outpatient care is dropping so not many nurses are needed. I hear there are plenty of nurses out there looking for work.

Personally I wouldn't trust hotjobs.com any more than I can throw it.

I'm a photographer, but I wouldn't bet on making close to 50,000 considering most photographers make next to nothing

If it fits into your life, as in time and $$.. of course higher education is not bad way to start things out. I'd never advise against college.. nor would I tell osmeone it was a must.

Per the theme of this thread; if you're gonna start your adult life working.. no matter if it's in the field you want to make a career out of, or just a job 'cause you gotta have one..

BE THE GUY WHO SHOWS UP EARLY...STAYS LATE.. AND WORK LIKE IT WAS YOUR OWN COMPANY AND YOUR PERFORMANCE WILL MAKE OR BREAK IT..  be the guy YOU'D want on YOUR payroll  ..

Everything else will fall into place   8-)

As a radar operator/repairman (my basic job description was repairman but I was also an Operrational Crew Chief), we all knew the Air Traffic Controller option was out there if we honorably ended our USAF hitch. We also knew it could be a highly stressful job for the pay in a high traffic area.
