Just because we can, should we?

Postby expat » Mon Mar 01, 2010 11:27 am

I came across this today. The possibility to take a picture of someone with your phone and then software will trawl faceblog and tw#tter to find out who you are. Just because we can is there a limit that says something is really not required. As it says, a stalkers dream?

1. Captain, if the problem is not entered into the technical logbook.........then the aircraft does not have a problem.
2. And, if you have time to write the fault on a napkin and attach to it to the yoke.........you have time to write it in the tech log....see point 1.

I find this worrying. The technology is already available. To check out face recognition download the latest version of Picasa. http://picasa.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=93773&hl=en_GB

If free software can do this, imagine what the more advanced stuff is like. I would be very wary of posting photos of children on these social networking sites.

There's no stopping this. Even if new laws would make it illegal. That software will just create a market for privacy software which we will pay for.. on a yearly basis.  :)

Yet another example of new technology not necessarily being a good thing. As stated previously, George Orwell had no *($#&*(^ idea!

That is a scary concept. I would not want something to systematically look for me just because my picture shows up on something.

Sounds like a garbage story to me -- & bet's on that it could not work for facebook photos --

Probably only partially useful for passport style face photos - no one of facebook/myspace whatever - has those

As Hagar points out, Picasa has a basic form that can check your hard drive for similar faces. If that can do the job, then why not this?

Luckily I have a "everyday" face  ;D  You can use my ID photo for anyone.! so face recognition would see me for George Clooney or Brad Pitt...

It is scary!!!

A further possible loss to people's privacy... I would imagine this sort of software is in use with cctv cameras in order to catch criminals?

True - However, Hasselblad 503W will cope better with your face, whereas a little Canon Sureshot will just bounce off...  :)

Indeed. The photos do not have to be full face or particularly good quality. What shook me is that Picasa can tell the difference between photos of my two granddaughters taken at the same age when even I sometimes have problems.
