As a firefighter myself, there could be nothing more embarassing than watching your own station burn.  The station in my hometown once burned, but it was to cover a certain officer's embezzlement of department funds.

Why on earth do the English refer to the fire station's mobile equipment as "appliances?"

It sounds like they are talking about stoves or refrigerators with wheels... :)

"Fire truck" seems to be much more descriptive...

...or in their case "fire lorry..."  ;D
