Aah, Vermont... if you been that side of the Connecticut, you'd been fortunate he didn't tell them you were an unstable New Yorker or you may have had the whole hat blown away. With your choice in best friends, you may have almost felt at home in 'nam -- or, it seems, 'nam lowered your perspective of friendship.

Texas is a huge desert.

Actually we have everything from desert, to prairie land, to forests, to rivers & lakes, to coast lines, to hill & mountains.

Texas has two industries: cattle and oil.

Don't forget about NASA and all the aeronautical industries.

There are three modes of transportation in Texas: horses, pickup trucks (with gun racks) and stretch limos with cow's horns on the front.

A typical stereotype response. We have all the same things the rest of the country has.

There are two kinds of music in Texas: country and western.

It's called H-town for a reason. Rap/R&B is a biggie there, plus ever heard of ZZ Top? Guess what, from Texas too. Many other popular rock bands from Texas as well. A simple Google search will show you this.

There are two things to drink in Texas: bourbon with branch water and Lone Star beer.

How about Shiner Bock? Probably one of the best beers ever made, right here in Texas!

There is one thing to eat in Texas: BBQ.

This is probably the best thing to eat here for sure!

Just about everyone on their way to boot camp watches that movie, gets the begeezuz scared out of them by the drill instructor, shows up to boot camp about to wet their pants, only to realize it's not QUITE as bad as it was in the 60's, then they feel cheated out of not getting their butt kicked by a DI and all they can brag about is getting screamed at 24/7.

I missed the 60s but still made it in well ahead of you; The Air Force, however, was expected to be more lax but our TIs (TI =DI) still had a problem with the volume control; maybe that's why I have a difficult time hearing someone speak when I'm not looking at them yet I can hear a twig snap in the distance (not that it was particularly useful while being stalked by a bear this week; overcast and no moon, I didn't even know whose gleaming beady eyes I stopped to stare down; if he'd decided to take on my challenge I doubt my little penknife would have helped the situation and I doubt I'd be typing this out now).

The Drill Sergeants aren't even supposed to call the kids names anymore! I mean, they churched it up a little compared to Full Metal Jacket when I went in, but they still came up with a lot of creative stuff to call us. But when you see kids graduating Basic Training, and they're still undisciplined whimps, I can't help but feel disappointed with the whole system.

Even in my Air Force basic we were given new, highly descriptive names... the WAFs got it even worse.
However, it seems the military standards are starting to mirror the general society attitudes, whereas, self-respect is being confused with disrespect -- maybe you (we) should replace that disappointed with disturbed, if not perturbed.

I had enlisted, I think it was fall of 1975, just before congress started poking thier nose into recruit training. During boot I got stress fractures in both heels, I was afraid to to complain about it to my drill instructor because I would delay my graduation from boot. But it became obvious to him that I was unable to put my heels down properly during practice for drill competition. Busted! He stuck his nose in my face and started screaming at me, calling me every name in the book. He said I was marching like a ruptured 3 legged Wombat!
This is where my original screen name on Sim forums came from.
Congress should have never messed with recruit training. It did me good the way it was.
