Alternatives

Postby ozzy72 » Sat May 30, 2009 2:26 am

I was wondering as MS seem to have pulled the plug on the FS series by getting rid of the Aces team what alternatives everyone has been looking at.
I've got all the CFSs, X-Plane 7 and 8, Janes WWII Fighters etc. However from a civilian point of view I'm spending more and more time with FlightGear (http://www.flightgear.org/). Has anyone else been using this superb bit of open source software? Anyone doing development for it?

I was not aware of FlightGear. It looks good, but what does it have over FSX for you?
Also how does it run FPS in comparison to FSX and graphic detail?

1. Captain, if the problem is not entered into the technical logbook.........then the aircraft does not have a problem.
2. And, if you have time to write the fault on a napkin and attach to it to the yoke.........you have time to write it in the tech log....see point 1.

For starters, it's 100% open source, meaning if we think something sucks in it. We can change it. No M$ overlords to deal with.

It's FREE!

It's made by the people for the people. The better the people involved, the better the product becomes.

I'm not looking for an alternative for FS. Still running FS9 the alternative would be FSX (if I could ever afford a better PC). Downloading Flightgear as I am writing this, just to check it out. Who knows, maybe it will get my interest in FS going again...

Well, I haven't lost interest in FS2004. I just can't be bothered to sit at my desk to fly anymore. I start FS up, select an aircraft, get it in the air and after 5 - 10 minutes off the whole thing thinking: F@#* this, there must be something better to do. Which there usually is. Be it some administration for work, playing with my little girl, having a chat and a few beers with some friends or chasing my wife around the house... :P

Life is catching up on me, I guess.

Crash ;)
