I miss getting that magazine. Maybe I should renew my membership....

I do agree with the problem with Flight Simmers creating bad habits of staring at the instrument panel instead of outside. My instructor had a hard time getting me to get my eyes outside. It took a while, but I don't have that problem now.

On the plus side, I was good at flying my instruments. She used to tell me that if the average private pilot were to accidentally fly into IFR conditions, he or she would only have a minute or two to get out of it before crashing. She once told me that I was so bad at staring at the insruments, that it would take me that long before I realized I was in IFR conditions.... ;D

But in the end, there are always going to be advantages and disadvantages to using PC flight simulators as a training aid. I think it depends on your attitude and how you look at it.

What I do to stop that habit is have the view to only show the top of the glare shield and up to block the instruments ;)

I've been saying this for years. Not realistic at all.

PS. I never liked those awful 2D panels. A decent DVC is a great improvement.

That I think is to do with one really big difference. A lot happens in the real world outside the cockpit. In FS you don't have that much to look at, and if you do, chances are you are doing something in the Sim that you would not be aloud to do in the real world. Also the senses are stimulated in a real cockpit, noise, vibration, some healthy fear maybe. I don't get that sat in front of a monitor.  Nothing much to do except watch the panel.

1. Captain, if the problem is not entered into the technical logbook.........then the aircraft does not have a problem.
2. And, if you have time to write the fault on a napkin and attach to it to the yoke.........you have time to write it in the tech log....see point 1.

I think the instructors should be less worried about simmers looking at the instruments all the time, and more worried about them climing out on the wing to take a picture to post in the screenshot comp.   ;D ;D
