My son was watching the Disney channel when his speech therapist came in the house telling about a crazy day with a plane maybe hitting one of the towers. I turned the channel just in time to watch the second aircraft hit.

I remember it very, very clearly.  I was standing outside during a fire drill in 7th grade.  We were informed of the attack when we got back in the building.  In a really twisted way, the alarm bell went off about the same time the first plane hit the tower.

I also remember clearly, that had I been 18 and done high school, I would've gone straight to my local recruiting station and enlisted, absolutely no doubt about it.  I remember clearly my desire for revenge, how enraged I was for months to come at my inability to get my own slice of payback.  It was literally like a second Pearl Harbor.

My desire hasn't been quenched.  They'll be looking for me at 30,000' in about seven years.

That reminds me of another thing. My dad was affraid that they were going to bring back the draft. He tryed to get me to join the Airforce ahead of time to make sure I would have a choice. He was also affraid that they would call him back.

Such a pleasant day for me yesterday I nearly forgot what day it was... but i very clearly remember that day.
In '01 I was in that area the day before; just happened to be scheduled for a site in midtown on the 11th because the job downtown was done... had I been down there, I'd have been coming up out of the PATH station below the towers probably between the first and second collisions. Still gives me a little shiver, thinking about that. I've heard terrible stories, from friends who were there, about what it was like at the foot of those towers just after the planes struck. And I know more than one person who was killed up there, in the impact zones.
 Glad I missed it.
As it turned out, my call on Tuesday was for around 11 AM; at nine-ish I turned on the TV to check the weather to see if I could put Peg out in her run for the day (hadn't built her doghouse yet) before driving down to NYC (lived up near Bear Mt. at the time).
My first thought (after first plane hit; just saw shot of burning bldg):
"Hm... this is not the weather... looks like a fire. What happened to the sprinklers?"
Second thought (saw the slashing hole, and heard the commentary): "Crap. A plane. Too big for a light airplane... but how could an airliner wind up doing that?"
Third thought (when second plane hit): "I'd always hoped they'd wait until after I'd died to start WWIII... looks like I get the day off. Maybe I should pack some things and head west- they say several birds are still not accounted for- Indian Point nuke plant is less than 20 miles away; then there's the C-5 fleet at Stewart, etc...."
Started packing; changed my mind; sat down to watch more; tried to call people, got nobody, watched TV, cried, worried, smoked lots of cigarettes, and grew more and more angry as the reports came in.  Such... wrongness.        And with civilian airplanes... the pilot half of me was in an agony all its own. The crew- could there be a worse fate for a professional pilot than having your command taken away for such a purpose?
May it never happen again... but it's not over, is it?
  And I'm still angry....

I was in 6th grade. They made mention that New York City was bombed. I didn't really know what was going on.

My brother and sister were let home early from school. I wasn't. When I got home from school, my mom was crying. It was the first time I'd ever see her cry.

I was playing tennis. Heard about it on the court, watched the summary on TV when I came home and thought "Cool, war!".

I was landing the Bell on the Helipad on the tower itself (FS2002?) when the phone rang and I was told to turn on the television by a freind, I couldn't believe the co-incidence!

I slept through the whole thing.  I was ending a vacation in Las Vegas (in some wierd time zone, maybe 3-4 hours off Eastern time) and woke up around noon (3-4 pm Eastern time).

My custom had become flicking on the TV (CNN) when I awoke and I was shocked out of my slight hangover.

My return flight on 9/12 was cancelled and I had to go through 3 hours of lines and enhanced security at KLAS on 9/13.

Just to put this in perspective. A friend of mine was on holiday visiting relatives in California at the time. He is a keen golfer so I imagine he spent a lot of his time on the golf courses. He's not in the habit of watching TV & has no TV set at home. On his return I asked him what effect the attack had on his holiday as I assumed it had put a damper on it. He told me that he didn't know much about it & only found out the details on his return to the UK.
