Oscar-winning actor Sir John Mills has died at the age of 97, a member of his staff confirmed today.
Star of more than 100 films, Sir John, who was knighted in 1976, will probably be best-remembered for his patriotic roles in such films as Ice Cold in Alex, Above Us the Waves, Dunkirk, Scott of the Antarctic and Tunes of Glory - one of his personal favourites.
He died earlier today at his home in Denham, Buckinghamshire after a short illness.
"Sir John died this morning at around 6.30am," a trustee for his estate said. "He'd been ill for about a month with a chest infection. He remained remarkably lucid until the end."
The archetypal English gentleman, Sir John graced stage and screen for more than 60 years, starting as a

I'm gutted.  One of my favourite actors of all time.

Very sad.

Very sad news indeed.

"Hobson's Choice" and "Tunes of Glory" (criminally not available on DVD in the UK) were two of my favourites of his, along with "The Way to the Stars" of course...

Ice Cold in Alex is a superb film and highly recommendable.

Pity he died, but as Scania said, he was 97. :P

I think the best thing about John Mills is that he usually played the ordinary bloke that most British people could identify with. He could have been your father, brother or the chap from next door. I have no idea of the amount he made during his career but at one time he seemed to be in every British made film. I believe he was featured in one only last year although he had lost his sight. A real trooper but no real surprise to hear he'd passed away
