How much is your gas?

The reason I raised it guys, was because it provokes interesting conversation and someone raised it with me in Canada the other day. It sure worked - look at the replies!

Dougs right - it hasn't changed really all year for us. Still super pricy, but at least it hasn't changed much. I think it sounds like the US is finally beginning to catch up with us though- good thing IMO - then they'll stop building those cars that gobble fuel and are real bad for the environment. That was why we made our cars so good on fuel over here - it was too expensive having them heavy and bulky!

Ben. I suggest there are other reasons for that which have nothing to do with the price of oil. I've already explained that the big percentage of what we pay in the UK is tax* & a general election has just been announced. 'Nuff said, except don't be at all surprised if the price rockets in a few month's time.

You cannot compare the US with the UK. For one thing it's a much bigger country. The whole culture is different & until recently the price of petrol (sorry I can't get used to calling it gas) was relatively cheap. On my first visit it was around 75 cents per gallon & from what I could make out this hadn't changed for many years. Most Americans like their big cars with big powerful engines as very often they're travelling much greater distances than we're used to. I did notice that in most places I've visited in the US, very few people walk anywhere & think nothing of using the car for a short trip of a few hundred yards or even just across the road. I don't know if this is the same for the whole US or in small-town America. On my last holiday there I hired a big gas-guzzler which was very comfortable & ideal for travelling long distances. None of us is any better than the other & we're used to having these things. Now they're running out we have to adapt. I think we have to get used to the idea that the good days are gone. It's still cheaper & more convenient for me to use my car than public transport. If they can change this I'll give up using the car.

*PS. According to the AA this is currently 73.4% for ordinary Unleaded petrol. I'll leave you to work it out.

Just had our 'ultimate unleaded' (BP) put up to 99.9p per litre today - the only reason we can't go any higher is because the pump displays don't have room for another digit, Also, BP don't know how the computers will react if we put the price up to three digits (a bit like the millenium bug I suppose).

PS. All the 'pole signs' that show the motorist what price the fuel is at each station only have room for three digits (inc. the decimal point).

I work for BP & it was a bit of a talking point at work today.

I'm sure they'll soon figure it out TSC. I'm only a pleb but it seems to me the obvious answer is to sell it by the 1/2 litre - or should that be 0.5 litres? Then they can start all over again. ::)

gas is just one of those things that no meatter how high the prices are you can get mad all ya want and its not gonna do a thing, so the best thing to do is to just not even look at the prices anymore and just fill up, or rely on public transportation. it will eventually get better, but before it gets better, its gotta get worse. (not trying to sound like an a-hole or like im yelling at you guys, cause im not, so please dont take it that way)

Thats all well and good Jackie. But over here Gas prices dont get better. I dont remember them ever dropping to a reasonable amount, and until the tax side of the cost is adjusted it never will.

The way I see it the prices will keep rising. Oil is a natural resource that will eventually run out. I have no idea how much there is down there or how long it will take but it will happen one day whether we like it or not.

Countries like China are now using more than ever before & demand will increase. Who can deny them their right to do what we've been doing for so many years? I certainly can't.

I haven't checked it out but suspect that compared with the average wage the price of a gallon of petrol in the UK is far cheaper now than it was 40 years ago.

Getting back to the question (been gone a few days), it's $2.10/gallon for regular unleaded. I just got back from Virginia. They have $2.40 a gallon!
