We seem to have scrounged a Bf109 from somewhere since I last looked too. i've never seen on of these in the 'flesh'!! This weekend is looking better and better. (I think I'll have to leave the Mrs at home. )

Yeah, I believe they are very small indeed. The dimensions in the 'table' and 'specs' that we see all the time don't seem to paint the picture of actually how small they were (inside and out).

(I'm always reminded of the quote in the 'Aircraft Specs' section of Fighter Ace, when they refer to the Bf109 cockpit thus:

"Kind historians describe the cockpit of the Bf109 as a 'glove-like' fit. The more honest describe it as 'coffin-like!")  ;D

We've acquired a whole lot of great planes since I was last there in 1995. Then, all we had was George, the Spit MkII, and a couple of WWI planes.
There's always been a great display of uniforms and weapons (from sidearms to 155mm canon) and gear etc (from all sides in all wars). It takes at least a whole day to take the complete tour. We've even got the remains of two of the three midget Subs that attacked Sydney harbour in 1942. They used to be separate, in their 'blown up' state. But I understand they've made 1 complete sub out of the two.

In the new, revamped aircraft displays we've got:

Lanc, Spit, P40, Bf109, P51D, 'Cheery Blossom bomb', Me163, Me262!!!!!!! , Zero, a crashed Oscar, Sea Fury, Wirraway, Mosquito, Mig15, Anson

I meant to mention before, when we were talking about 'First Light'.
Until I read it the other day, I didn't know that the Spit MkI had a 'manually pumping' type landing gear.
Silly me thought that the Polikapov I-16 was about the only Mono-wing Fighter with sucha caper.  :o

Was it all MkI's or just maybe the earlier ones.  ???

Being as 'unpopulated' as Australia is (by comparison with UK and US etc - 23 million), we have a distinct lack of 'flying' Warbirds (even in the RAAF.........lol ).

But we have a number of great museum displays. I think the next best would have to be the Temora Aviation Museum. It has the only 'flying' Spitfire (a MkVIII), which is flown regularly at the Museum's airshows.

It also has Metoer,Canberra, Vampire, Dragonfly, Wirraway and Tiger Moth.

I seem the recall that the I-16 had a series of chains and cogs that looked like they had come of a bicycle to get the wheels up. 44 complete turns of the handle I seem to recall. Also didn't the Wildcat have manual landing gear? In the form of cogs and chains too?

I think you mean chains & sprockets Woody although the guys on the shop floor often referred to gears as cogs. The Wildcat has been mentioned in the other thread.
