I used to race Tamiya off-roaders about 20 years ago! They had a top speed of about 30mph, and about 30 mins battery power. V.Good for the times.

I've built a couple of Tamiya's over the years. Mostly off road stuff but I built a Touring Car Mrec that was really, really fast.
I sold them years ago.

I have an HPI RS4 MT racing truck(on and off road).  It is 4x4 and is good for over 50mph.

Yes, some of the nitro cars will do over 70, but it can get expensive and messy...never gone that way.

I also have my orignal 2wd monster truck(could jump it easily over a person), a snow cat(tracked, the type they use to groom ski runs) for the winter.

I probably have over $1000 invested in it all.

Currently, the HPI is busted after hitting a concrete curb sideways while braking(slowing from high speed run)at 30 mph.  Broke off a whole wheel assembly, bent a steel dogbone drive shaft, and the battery ejected through the chassis(almost said fuselage! ;D) breaking the plastic side which is around 2mm of high-impact plastic.

You could probably find a Tamiya F-1 car for around 250 usd, and thats pretty basic(you would need an ESC, motor, servo, receiver, and controller, and battery)

I was into RC sailboats for a good while there.  I like that they're nice and quiet and relaxing...
