Dangerous Computer Virus Again

Postby Iroquois » Wed Apr 30, 2003 1:52 pm

I received this just today, please read to protect your system.

VERY  IMPORTANT WARNING.
Please Be Extremely Careful Especially if using internet mail such as Yahoo, Hotmail and so on.  This information arrived this morning from Microsoft and Norton.

Please send it to everybody you know who accesses the Internet.  You may receive an apparently harmless email with a  Power Point presentation "Life is beautiful. pps".  If you receive it DO NOT OPEN THE FILE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, and delete it immediately.

If you open this file, a message will appear on your screen saying: "It is too late now, your life is no longer beautiful", subsequently you will LOSE EVERYTHING IN YOUR PC and the person who sent it to you will gain access to your name, e-mail and password.

This is a new virus which started to circulate on Saturday afternoon.  WE NEED TO DO EVERYTHING POSSIBLE TO STOP THIS VIRUS.  AOL has already confirmed the severity, and the antivirus Softs are not capable of destroying it. The virus has been created by a hacker who calls himself "life owner".

PLEASE MAKE A COPY OF THIS EMAIL TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS.  PASS IT ON

Has anyone considered that a virus warning might contain a virus or worm?

With an ending like that I would be suspicious.

I always like to check these things out from reliable sources.  Not opening an email won't hurt anything, of course, but this is a hoax.

I figured that so I simply copied and pasted the text from the message and sent it to everyone in my address book.
Even if it is a hoax, we should still keep our heads up.

The warning about a Microsoft PowerPoint file named "Life is Beautiful" carrying a a computer-destroying virus is a hoax, one that has been with us since at least January 2002. It originally circulated in Portuguese, but it was later translated into English and a host of other languages.

Although this particular example is a hoax, PowerPoint presentations can contain viruses, so prudent computer users should always check downloaded or e-mailed PowerPoint presentations before opening them.

In September 2002 the hoax was circulated anew as "Everything is Beautiful."

Orenda. These hoaxes are like chain letters & almost as bad as viruses. The whole intention behind them is to clog up the e-mail system with useless spam. Genuine virus warnings are never circulated by e-mail.

I had a friend who once got an e-mail that contained authentic information regarding a real virus with an attachment that was supposedly a security patch. It was actually a virus

Thanks for that Andrew. I forgot to mention that this is a crafty method used for distributing viruses. The virus appears to come from an official source & the warning is genuine. The "patch" attachment is not & is an actual virus. Remember what I said. Official virus warnings or fixes for them are never distributed by e-mail. Check for hoaxes on one of the anti-virus sites WebbPA mentioned before doing anything or mass mailing them to friends. If in any doubt, delete them.

Good advice Hagar, if in doubt DELETE!
Here we do sometimes get virus warnings from our ISPs by email, but you can always recognise them as they have the subject 'Virusz!'.
If its not from your ISP zap it!

Coo... See what I've caused... :P

I thought it would be a good technique for distributing a virus like I said.

I always delete junk and suspicious emails. I am quite surprised at my hotmail though... It hardly ever gets junk mail. Unlike AOl... >:( Guarenteed at least 6 a day!

I remember having AOL at 12 and getting offers from Visa. Worse still, my mom kept getting bizzare porn ads in her email. They were comming from her old account which the old ISP must have forgotten to close down.
