Disableing scenery areas

Postby SkyHawk00 » Fri Jan 06, 2012 8:20 pm

Would it be a good idea to disable certain senery areas depending on where I am flying, Like say I am flying in hwaiiai, could I disable the "Africa, Asia, and Europe" Meshes to increase fps :-?

I've also wondered this mainly because I wondered why even have the option to disable an area if it doesn't really do anything.

Although I imagine the answer would be no it doesn't increase fps.

I have multiple Scenery.cfg files that I load based on where I wish to fly. I have several folders in the
same directory named for the areas...Hawaii, USA, Europe, Oz, ALL. The trimmed down scenery.cfg
files are kept in their respective folders. To change, I simply COPY the desired cfg file into the
Documents and Settings\\Application\Microsoft\FSX  folder (up one level from where the
"storage folders" are located).

This saves quite a bit of time when FSX loads, depending on how many addon scenery areas you have.
I also deselect the default areas that are outside the area I am flying. Those 4-digit areas, 0407, 0306, etc.

The SDK has a map showing which of those files cover a given area.

I started doing this a long time ago when I was seeing FSX loading scenery half-way around the world from
where I was flying, using FileMon.

In any case, it is easy to do and even if you load FSX and forget to set the scenery.cfg file you want, simply
COPY the file you want, overwriting the current one, go to the dropdown menu in flight and select  World, Scenery Library, and just click "OK". FSX will rebuild the svenery based on the new file.

No, sorry. The SDK is part of the Deluxe or Acceleration packs and must match the version of
FSX that you have.

But it would decrease load times, I imagine.

That seems like a lot of effort to save on initial sim/session load up.

If it changed in game load speeds for blurries etc freeing up CPU power for FPS then that would be well worth doing  :)

It is in the Terrain SDK section, Terrain and Scenery heading, about 1/3rd of the way down the page.
The Base File Information section.

You can't miss it. Red squares with 0 to 11 across the top and 0 to 7 down the side.
