Upgrading to Jets, and unable to fly them!!

Postby Captain Harry » Tue Feb 10, 2009 3:38 am

Hi folks,
I've  been flying the turboprops for a while now, and can fly them pretty well.  What I can't do is fly the jets.  I just can't get them to slow down, even when there's no throttle (with no autothrottle on), the spoilers deployed to max and the flaps at max.  I've flown the lesson on jets and that went fine.  Can't see what I'm doing so badly wrong!! Help please!

Are you sure the jets are going to quick, or is it just that you are used to the slower speed of turbo props? Like what speeds for the jets do you call "quick" and what planes are they?

Hello Captain Harry,

Looks as if we both have the same problem.  See my mail next to yours Throttle Down issue.

Timothy.

Make sure throttle sensitivity is FULL and NULL ZONE is ZERO... It is controls somewhere...

What kind of speeds are we talking about, too?

And make sure Auto Throttle is off. and if equiped, use the Revere Thrust (F2) after touchdown.

Assuming your throttle is working properly..

You gotta plan jet descents WAY out..  Get the airspeed under control WELL before starting your final approach.

i assume that by 'jets' you mean the 737 or bigger... well, these planes are big and heavy... it's kinda like stopping a train when compared to the little props... you can't rely on drag to hold it back if you're also throwing their noses down onto the ground and plummeting towards earth

everything on these planes must be SLOW... descend slowly, gradually lose airspeed, and slowly turn to line up the runway

of course, when things go THAT slow, the airport is getting mighty big in the window there, so that's why you gotta plan ahead... WAY ahead

the one thing that helped me the most, and i think will do you good, is to learn and use the rule of three... i think your problem slowing down is directly related to descending too steeply and picking up more speed than you can lose while you descend

the rule of three is very simple... it's simply a guideline for a proper descent. it means that the aircraft must travel 3 miles forward to lose 1000 feet of altitude

i'm not too sure of the correct speeds for each kind of aircraft, but i generally pull this off at a speed of 250kts for anything larger than a 737, and it works well

so, what does this mean practically?

it works like this: if you're flying at 30000ft, and want to know when to start descending, discard the last 3 zeros (you get 30) and multiply that by 3.

So, what speed should I be doing on touchdown in a jet?

Capn Harry -

I'm betting you're using the autopilot. Be aware that shutting OFF the autopilot does NOT disengage the autothrottle and you'll happily go along at whatever speed you set.

So, how do I disengage both autopilot AND autothrust?  I checked that it wasn't armed, so where does it show up?

... ;D...!

I am reading this Post, and thinking to myself that I will be forever grateful that I decided to fly only "Piston Props" in the Sim for that past 11 years... ;).... ;D...!

...even "Turbo-Props" with Pratt and Whitney PT6 motors, take far too long to speed up and slow down for my liking!... ;D...!

Paul...I love old-fashioned, reciprocating "Pistons" that go up and down!... ;D...!

oh if i'm not mistaken, by default the key shortcut for autothrottle is CTRL+R

hit it once and see if you can slow down  :)
