I would like to post a screenie of my services and processes screens.  I just pop a regular screenie and resize it for posting here, correct?  What size do I make it for easy fit in a post and to meet the size requirements?

Then, maybe someone could tell me which ones I can turn off and which ones will hose my system if I muck about them...

Thanks...

Have 42 Processes running on my machine including the Taskmanager itself.  62 Services show "Running".

Running at dead idle with Task Manager running:

CPU Usage:  1% - 3%

RAM Usage:  536 - 562 MB.  This bearing in mind am running some really good crappy PNY OTS from Best Buy.  I have ordered the first of the two selections St. Nick was kind enough to toss my way earlier in this thread.

From what I can gather, 40 or 41 processes in Vista at idle is about as good as it gets.  Correct?  Or should I try to do more in the way of quashing processes and services?

Thankie

I got down to about 35 idle when I used Vista. After going through Nick's awesome guide, I went to MSCONFIG (just type it in the start menu) and went through the STARTUP and SERVICES tabs and took out everything I didn't need. that should cut down on your idle process count

Thanks, Sub.

I think Im gonna wait on any more tweaking til my new ram comes in.  Probably do the do on the machine next weekend.

I dont know what to shut off now.  The obvious ones like RealPlayer and the like were easy along with the one's Nick specifically mentions.

My gaming machine is pretty light on its feet now that Ive done the Nick Optimumus treatment to it.  Am I ever so glad he dipped his toes far enough into Vista to update his tweak for all of us.  Im gonna star the tweak on this XP Pro machine Im typing on tonight.  Gotta pay for another compy of O&O Defrag (well worth the expense, i asure you!).

I have a Visa latptop that is about to go thru the tweak process in a few minutes.  I cant think of a better way to spend a blustery and drizzly Sat afternoon, can you?

Tanks to all and large beer for ya...

no problem at all

you know.. my power supply just died two days ago and I had to buy a new one for my older system which I plan to sell when the ram for my new system arrives.. so I took it out, installed the new power supply (700w.. up from 500w before) and all of a sudden my hard drives won't boot the OS..

No clocking on this system or my brain for that matter...I will get into clocking when the system based on the new chips is built around July next year.

Just need some RAM for a straight-up running that is better than my current PNY RAM...

240 Pin DDR2, I beleive it is...

Then you need to stay with the LOWEST timing RAM that works with the clock of the system

YOU CAN NOT buy 1066 5-5-5 memory and have it give you ANY performance unless you clock and use the memory speed.

If you install such memory and leave the clock on default your FSX performance WILL DROP!

So what you need to do is locate the correct 'unclocked' memory speed for your system and purchase 2x2GB of the LOWEST CAS timing product you can buy.

AH!?  Wish you had said that in the recommend post...LOL!  But it is not a disaster.  I beleive I will just have to go into clocking.  I will see what the perf is on non-clocked install once I receive the new RAM.  Then I will see if it will be worth the while and the steep learning curve to learn clocking.

Currently Im running 20fps+ and fairly high sliders in the more rural areas.  Flight is smooth and AC behavior is predictable.  I simply dont fly in the big dog areas as my frames drop into the low teens and single digits.  Im satisfied with this for the mean time as I am gonna upgrade to a new rig in the fall '09.

If nothing else, I can simply return the RAM ive just purchased to Newegg and get a credit for something else I might need or want.

Thanks for all the advice, Nick...

AGH!  I didnt read the prev post over again...Doom on me...

I may experiment with clocking my current rig after all.

After more mature and "sober" (and I do mean SOBER) reflection, I have decided that it will be better to hose this system than the nice new rig I plan to build in July or so...

And this is Brian's brain on OC learning curve...FRY FRY FRY...

Thanks Nick for spanking me...Loved it BABE!

I believe in learning as much as can before diving into something like overclocking.  I hosed my previous system's Windows install wise twice by making a simple data entry error "TWICE" while doing your Windows Optimize Thingie, Nick.  Couldnt figure out what I had done and dont remember what it was nearly a year later, but you get my point.

That mistake was minor, just hosed the Win install.  I have seen the horror stories of what people have done to their systems with the "Let us see what this does...More Voltage?  Must be good right?" type of experimenting.  I am gonna try to avoid that type of mistake.  If I do happen to hose my whole system?  Ah, well?  Anybody need a tree trimmed or an engine worked on?  That's how I make extra money to play with computer, guns and my RC aircraft...(Read CRASH my RC aircraft).  These are my chosen hobbies to turn perfectly good money into noise, smoke and wreckage.

I have picked up that clocking in small bites is the way to go.  Not try to go for the gold uber ghrtz right out of the box.  Same as not trying to build a race car engine your first tear-down and rebuild.  Parts on the street, anyone?

I am gonna do the research and ask intelligent questions when I run into a stumbling block.  Have a neighbor who worked in the Apollo and Shuttle programs in the hardware side of computers.  Think Im gonna hit him up for any knowledge and experience he might bring to the table.  He already has told me he will help me install and set up, including lapping the processor, a new CPU cooler.

And the bro-in-law is in IT with ATT.  He has acess to some folks who will help him with just about anything.  He owes me for a particular Chevy 350 yet.  Time to COLLECT!

So I will be out of the loop except for the every once in a while "What the hell does this mean?"

Thanks all...Let the research begin...Pray for me?  Please?  FRY FRY FRY?

And I, The Bad Penny, officially leave this thread for The Netherworld of Overclocking!  I banish myself!

Pity me...And fry up some eggs, cause I'll be serving up fried brains any day now!  Just did the google thing for overclocking?  I am tempted to shoot this old computer as the results came back like ten million to the nth power!  Sheesh and Shazaam!

Night all...3am gonna come WAY to soon!
