Thanks flyinjoe,

Your post gave me some hope.  I think the fact that I'm a novice, scares me when talking tweaks.  It's not that I don't want to, I'm just affraid that my inexperience will end up doing more harm than good.  I'd really appreciate your input though.  I've been searching all over for tutorials on disabling unecessary processes in Vista, but what I've read seems confusing.

Okay, to the best of my knowledge, here's the list of things I did with FSX on Vista to get it working as good as it does on my XP drive.

Wow, thanks flyinjoe, a question though.  I have disabled Aero and went to Vista Basic, because everytime I started FSX, I would get a pop-up on my desktop that said "windows is changinging to Vista Basic..."  For some reason FSX would not load when I was using Aero.  Once FSX loaded, if I exited full screen mode and minimzed FSX, windows would change back to Aero and FSX would crash, thus why I disabled Aero and use Vista Basic.

Do you have any idea why it did this?  Would FSX load for you, while using Aero?

I have no idea why that might be happening.  My Aero theme gets disabled as well when I launch FSX, but when I go from full screen back to windows mode, my Aero theme stays disabled and FSX doesn't crash.   Sorry I couldn't be more helpful with that one.

Best bet is open the Themes, right click mouse and choose Personalize.  Get the Aero theme on and save to desktop as Vista.  Go back in and set Windows Basic, classic or whatever, save to desktop as FSX.  Just stop the sidebar temporarily and use the FSX theme on the desktop with the mouse theme set to none.  On return just set the Vista theme and turn the sidebar on.  I put it back because I like it and I have the train times live on the sidebar.

Many thanks flyinjoe for your detailed response.

I have had no serious problems with Vista (touch wood).  For some reason, and other Vista users have reported the same, I have found Unlimited framerate seems to be the best for smoothness.

I too disabled Aero, and have never used it.  To the chagrin of the trendy young assistant to my tech, I got them to disable it, and I seem to be able to live satisfactorily without it!

My main nervousness has been about turning off services, and I will now follow your guide,  Thanks,

In Feb I am upgrading to a quadcore Intel 9650 (3 gigs) not for speed but in the hope of even smoother running.  It will be matched with my existing 8800GTX but I am waiting for Nick to reveal the name of the card that he is testing.  Come on Nick make a slip.

I have NOD32 installed, and run it when I use real weather (ASX).  It soesn't seem to have a great affect on performance.  Some claim not to use antivirus.  It means they do not have teenagers in the house, or are so pure of heart that they themselves never surf the web.

I am glad that you have made this post, because in a few years Vista will be fairly widespread as more and more machines come with it OEM.  So we need to start to understand how it interacts with FSX.

However my greatest moan, is that DX10 functionality has been so piddling I need never have left XP.  Ah well, Caveat Emptor.

Make sure the taskbar is hidden in VISTA. Turn it off or hide it when using FSX. Some drivers seem to like that bar hidden on the desktop.

I use "EndItAll'.  Very fast.  Don't know if this free download is still available, though.

Hi guys,

I performed your tweeks Nick and got a vast imprvoement. Thanks a lot. Currently I run XP Pro, but in a few months I might well go up to vista ultimate - not sure whether to go for X64 or x86 yet.

So a reinstall of FSX is needed. At the time of me performing your updates I did not have acceleration, but will have when/if I go to Vista. So, should I isntall all the updates for FSX and then acceleration and then do your tweaking upgrade? Or do your upgrades and then acceleration after?

Thanks

Tom

all software is installed before any changes or tweaks.. and overclocking is never done until its all finished, including tweaks.

This list is old and dead... a new one is located on the 2-3rd page of the thread pinned at the top of the forum

Nick:  a naive question, are you referring to the Windows taskbar or the Menu bar in FSX?

You mention driver 169.13 but at your recommendation I am using a beta driver 174.xx.  What is your suggestion now?

169.13?

That was a long time ago in the driver world the way nvidia is pumping out drivers to hide their problems

The 174.xx are the currents and what I use. I have not had much time to test any lately.

The Windows task bar in Vista.. at one time it was reported hiding it before FSX launch had an impact. That was a while ago too so the service packs and drivers may have made a change in that area'

As I said, this thread is dead.. there is nothing in it that is current
