CRJ 700 is way too touchy

Postby jieitai » Wed Oct 22, 2008 10:32 pm

The CRJ 700, along with the Baron 58, are extremely touchy for me to fly. It's like they have max sensitivity, yet controls are set at default. It's a major pain to keep these two planes level--they're always bobbing up and down, and the slightest input I make on the joystick (no matter how minute) overdoes it. It's easier for my to keep a chopper level!

I've tried adjusting the sensitivity and null zones, with no luck. Any suggestions?

I agree with you in that they are very touchy in FSX, but it just takes practice to get used to them.

If you really want the controls to be more accurate, you can try editing the aircraft.cfg file for each of them. I recommend you not do it unless you know what you're doing though.

Maybe Brett Henderson can answer this question for you or help you edit the file. See if he replies to this thread

**ALWAYS MAKE A BACKUP BEFORE TRYING CFG ADJUSTMENTS**

Yeah.. the Baron is a handful.. I've flown similar-sized twins and it's just not right.. I've built several aircraft.cfg / Air-file from scratch, and have found that accurate numbers and geometry always work out pretty well. I have no idea how MS got this one so wrong.

My fix for the Baron was to adjust control surface locations and deflections, and the moments of inertia, but that can cause more problems than it solves, if you don't have experience doing it.

For a quick and dirty fix, there is a [Flight Tuning] paragraph in the aircraft.cfg file. Each line in that paragraph is self-explanatory, and is followed by the number

Thanks for the response, Brett. Do you think you can post what your aircraft.cfg reads here in the forums?

UU, the vertical speed constant changes the sensitivity of the vertical speed gauge, and consequently, the responsiveness of the auto-pilot when it comes to altitude hold...

I dont advise changing that number, because while flying by instrument, you need a realistically responding VSI.

I think the original poster was talking about actual pitch control.. not an auto-pilot that was having trouble holding altitude. If you fly by autopilot, who cares if the plane handles realistically.. lol  (couldn't resist..lol   :D   )

I'll post my updates to the cfg files on the Baron, KingAir. Bravo and CRJ by PM...

Hm, haven't flow the real 700 IRL only the 100 but the FSX 700 flies really nice. (roll inertia could be a bit higher)
The CRJ IS sensitive but also as IRL, try to make tiny corrections with the elevator trim instead of using the joystick.
Especially during approach as soon as you are stabilized try to use just a tad of nose up/down trim.
During high speed cruise in level flight you never touch the elevator (IRL as well). Only elevator trim.
