FIX FOR BLACKED OUT VC CANOPYS - FSX SP2

Postby dienkonig » Sat Oct 04, 2008 10:02 am

a little bit of fiddling never hurt anyone.
this fix requires at least one texture from the Alphsim EA-6B prowler,
spicificly the VC_Glass.bmp. this fix will work on textures in BMP form.
i will upload the file if it turns out i was the first one to descover this

for an example, heres the Iris F14 fix,

im assuming this will work for other aircraft. if somone can plz verfy that id be thankful

a hitch ive descoverd
the aircraft must have a seperate file for the canopy glass for it to work. i tried to fix the KBT FA 18E. there was no file labled glass. i replaced all the files and ended up with a practicly transparent aircraft,
except for the VC glass -.-

Normally this is fixed with some kind of texture program, I think, but this sounds a lot quicker and more along my line of thought 8-). First time I've heard of it being done though. Does this only work with .bmp files? :-?
A little better explanation would be nice. Are you overwriting a texture when you move the vc-glass.bmp, or adding a new texture and then renaming the texture that was used for the glass? I'm a little unclear on some of this, but very intrigued ;). This could make fixing black glass a hell easier if it was just a drag & drop deal. Wonder if something like this could be done for props & rotors?

what im doing is taking the VC glass file from one texture (which works) and using it to overwrite the VC glass file which doesnt work
proberly in another. e.g. bolting a new canopy onto a plane. just the
one file moves

heres another visual aid

Please understand clearly that this technique is very model specific. Not every model has a separate texture for the glass!

If there is no separate glass bitmap, then you must open every bitmaps used and see which of them have the "glass" used.

Then you can go about altering that part of the Alpha channel that's used by the "glass..."  8-)

Re props and rotors...... it can be done easily by replacing the "bad" prop texture with a workable one. You just need to find a plane with the same, or close to, the same size prop.
I suppose if one is more exacting you could make it a more involved process, but this is a quick fix I found after sp2 altered some "FSX compatible" add-ons to appear to have solid and black props.

Yes I do.... the question was raised above by socialgarbage regarding props and textures, I offered a quick, simple solution that avoids altering the texture files themselves. Sorry if the simplicity escapes you.

Works beautifully! Just takes a little patience to locate a good matching prop, but once found, perfect. Although I'm getting better with DXTBMP. ;)  Thanks for the tip! ;)
