Speedometer Failing :(

I am flying a plane using the snowstorm preset weather theme. Once i get past the clouds an above the storm my speedometer fails on the primary flight display and the stand-by one. Any ideas?

The moisture on the probe froze and blocked the airflow to the gauge for proper readings last time I heard.

I don't know the remedy though.

Moisture + cold = icing of the Pitot Tube

Turn on the Pitot Heat switch. On larger aircraft may be part of the anti-icing system.

It's those danged Gremlins, I tells you!  Sneaky, and tricksy they are!  Hiding in those cold clouds, sticking their wee little thumbs in the pitot tube!  The only was to get rid of the varmits is to hit them with the heat!!

In real life we turn on the pitot heat anytime the outside air temperature is below freezing and there is visible moisture.  I think the airline guys leave it on all flight, but I may be wrong.

Ok guys i this only happens with the default 747 and i have the De-Ice on until the outside temperature is in the positives. Does the default 747 have a separate pitot tube heat from the main anti-ice system?

I think the default just uses the basic icing arrangements for all aircraft.  However add-ons simulate some or all of the de-icing systems.  A number of the anti-icing components are on automatically as the aircraft fly at high, very cold altitudes - often through cloud and moisture on the way up and down.  However they also have full wing de-ice and nacelle anti-ice that are sometimes activated by the pilots.

However FSX is good.  If you fly into icing conditions in a defaut aircraft the AIR SPEED INDICATOR (not called the speedo in a plane) begins to wind back simulating icing of the pitot tube that creates the pressurised air that at varying air speeds puts differential pressure on the instrument and shows the changing airspeed.

Planes and ice don't go together - it adds weight and distorts the airflow, and can put a plane at considerable risk.

Yesterday, I flew my FS 2004 Trusty Default Beech Baron 58 over the Sierra Nevada Mountains, en route from Sacramento to Reno, at an altitude of 14,000 Feet ASL, using "Cold Fronts" weather, and my air speed indicator suddenly failed, (returned to 0 Knots).

Switching on "Pitot Heat", (and de-icing the Wings and Props), cured the problem after a minute or so, and the indicator returned to normal......!

Very realistic!... [smiley=thumbsup.gif]...!

Pitot Heat, is similar to Carburettor Heat. Under certain unfavorable atmospheric conditions they should be regularly applied... ...!

ok well i tried it again and the air speed indicator keeps failing. i even had the de-ice for the default 747 on the entire time and it still failed.
You think FSX might simulate thermal shock?

There should be a swtich for PITOT HEAT, not just de-ice.

on the default 737 it is separate but on the default 747 i can only find the de-ice switch. Do you think it could be thermal shock?

A peek in the FS 2004 Default Boeing 737 Panel file reveals this switch...>>>

...so I would presume the same Pitot Heat Switch would appear in the FSX Default Boeing 737... ...?
