FSX vs. Reality?

Postby Vuikag » Tue Jul 15, 2008 10:36 pm

I kept hearing stuff that FSX is just like real life, so I ditched FS9 and went to FSX to check out some landmarks in Newport oregon.

First, the famous Newport Lighthouse!

Some things are better in FS9, and some things are better in FSX.  Bridges are a good example, I guess.  On the other hand, aircraft rendition is better in FSX, and that is the main point of the game.

And for North America, try the UTs - Ultimate Terrain X for Canada and the USA.  An enormous improvement over the default.  And use the new FSGenesis mesh beneath it, and use one of the landclss add-ons, FSG or Cloud 9 and....  You're right, on first look the default scenery is a disappointment, but the available enhancements turn the world into something very real and totally immersive.

And with GEX and FEX even better.

Yeah, some stuff looks better in FSX and some things do not. The closer you are to the ground, the textures can get bad. Also the bridges look horrible as shown in the pic. However flying at 30,000 feet looking down at the mountains look very realistic (albeit with a good computer though). So I guess it means you have to take the bad with the good or get some terrain addons.

I may be an old stick-in-the-mud, having both FS 2004 and FSX, but Aircraft appearance and complexity mean little, or nothing to me, compared to the scenery when I am close to, or on the ground...
...and at the moment, with all my various enhancement to my FS 2004 scenery over the years, together with my own scenery designs (using some Payware Design programs), have left me still running my trusty FS 2004 running smoothly at maximum settings on my "lower end computer"....Joy!.... :)...!

As a General Aviation, low level Pilot, "nice" scenery is all-important to me....
..its what I see, all the time, when looking outside... ;D...!

Paul....G-BPLF... 8-)...!

So well put Foz and I totally agree with the idea.  My rendition of EGCB Barton with Helicopters flying in and out of one runway, whilst the light planes fly in/out of a different runway has me enthralled.  So I know where you`re coming from.  It gives you a sense of inner peace and satisfaction somehow.  The underlying base of the sim, be it FS2004 or FSX doesn`t matter once you find your Nirvana (the Buddhist version-inner peace).   ;D

Now its even more like reality at EGCB Manchester Barton.  In real life you drive off the dual carriageway, turn left and drive 100 yards to the car park.  Straight ahead are the planes, parked on the grass behind a low fence.  To the left and 120 yards away are the helicopters I added-nearest the RW02/20 they use.  A little further in that direction is RW09R/27L where the planes taxi to and take off.  Behind that by another 200 yards is another building half hidden by the undergrowth, the Police helicopter is parked there-I haven`t added that yet.  Back to the car park and look right, 150yards away is one of the oldest towers in the UK, behind that is a large hanger where I intend adding back some AI microlights as in real life.  To the side is the fuel pump and quite near this are some more helicopters which I just mirrored as AI and using RW32/14 to take off and land.

I just had a heli taking off at 9:15am on RW32
A heli taking off at the same time on RW02
planes landing on RW09R @ 9:04: 9:12, 9:13 and 9:27

At 9:53 the next two helicopters flew out on RW32 and 02, a heli flew in to RW32 and another to RW02, followed by a rook of planes on RW09R.

I just need to stagger the times a bit and use some different helicopters.  I set them mostly the same just to test easily.

Pinch me and tell me this isn`t real life!  Its getting awfully close, even closer when the microlights fly in/out again-I`ll share them on RW09R and park them outside the large hanger as you normally see them through the open doorway.
