hey guys, i think there is something i discovered today. I reformatted to put on a 64bit version of vista, because i put 2 more gigs of ram on to total 4 gigs, and i noticed that my fps went from 5-15 to 20-30, this is not a joke, and to top it off, i upped my gfx in the process and before i was in dx9 mode, on this doubling i was in dx10 mode.
my rig
intel q6600 quad core, geforce GTX 280 OCX 1 gig, 4 gigs 800mhz ram, nforce 680i lt sli, 750 gigs hd, dvd rw drive, 23 inch lcd monitor, windows vista ultimate sp2 x64/Win 7 RC x64 dual boot, TrackIR 4 Pro with Trackclip, Razer Lachechis Mouse

Another thing, this is especially important for lower end video cards like mine. My FSX ran at about 3 fps with settings on medium low. I played with the target frame rate, and moved it to unlimited. My frame rate moved to about 6 fps. On my video card I turned my anti aliasing down to 2x. Before it was on application controlled, and was running at a much higher setting.  Now FSX consistently runs at 10+ fps, in large cities. Doing these two things made the difference between FSX being a slideshow and being a game. Also, I had a problem with textures on aircraft being extremely sloppy. I turned Anti Aliasing to it's highest possible setting. The frame rate plunged to -1 fps. I turned down anti aliasing, and turned up the global texture resolution setting to ultra high. The aircraft were crystal clear without any sacrifice in frame rate. Now FSX runs and looks twice as good, and I didn't spend a penny. It is far from perfect, but I can live with it until I upgarade. The moral of the story is don't be afraid to experiment!

It's a bad idea to set target framerate to unlimited. FPS will constantly jump high and low, and the computer uses way too many resources. 25-30 FPS is much better.

With my stinky video card, the framerate always jumps around, so the fps being mostly 10 is beter than it being mostly 3.

Wrong!  nVidia recommends it for some video cards.  What works or does not work for one person does not necessarily mean it will be the same for all.  The whole FSX experience depends on many variables that make a vast difference from one machine to the next.  On my machine alone setting unlimited creates the best experience of all.  This does not mean that all should unlock.  Only individual trials tell you which is best for you.
