Thanks Brett, and Vodka, for the tips. I saved a flight out of KEDW (a place, relatively easy on the FPS), with the default 737 at 34% fuel load, and I got it down on the center.



I tried again, and I got it relatively close to the center (I was distracted while the AP was flying over the threshold, and came in relatively hot and high, flying a larger section of the approach manually.



And, one from an attempt last night - pretty good I would say considering its:

A: a 747-400 with 97% fuel load.

B: Canberra.

C: a 27knot wind, that acted as both a crosswind and a tailwind.

Remember that you should always try to land into the wind if at all possible

If you got a FULLY loaded 747 onto the runway under those conditions, you're definately getting it

Brett:  well done indeed.  But simply because of that complexity, all heavy jets are designed for auto-flight.

I have a friend who was a 747-400, and before that an A340 captain, who said they always did a full FMC, MCDU set up even for circuits.

The difficulty that you had simply shows why auto flight is the norm not the exception.  And hand flying in the troposphere is close to impossible and actually illegal unless in an emegency.

On the other hand they all sneak as much hand-flying on take-off, and on final that they can, otherwise it is all too unchallenging.

Brett, look for the download Baron 58F - a zip file from AVSIM I think,  It contains a replacement 'Fine Tuning' section for both the default Baron and the Kingair.  This adjustment makes both planes far more realistic to fly.

The defaults are far too twitchy in pitch particularly, which makes them hard to fly well on an instrument approach.

I must say that after putting a fair amount of work in, I am greatly enjoying the Wilco Airbus series.  They are tubes, but their systems are extremely well replicated and their handling approximates what I believe a heavy aircraft should be like.  I've flown from the right hand seat some big twins but never a jet.

Yes, back in the olden days an airline pilot friend hoofed the first officer out of the right hand seat and I hand flew an F27 for about an hour.  Pity, he wouldn't let me do the approach and landing!
