framerates

Postby yancovitch » Thu Feb 21, 2008 11:11 am

i noticed that i'd start off with around 20fps which is about average......and each time i go from full screen to windowed, or change a setting in season or whatever.....the frame rates go down to between 6 and 9......and stay there....maybe i'm holding my controller too tight or something...... :)

suggestion

This ASSUMES you are indeed running FSX SP2

RUN Dx9 and STAY OUT OF DX10 MODE

try deleting the entire FSX.cfg file (move it out of the directory for safe keeping) and start CLEAN

boot FSX and let uit build a new config... go to the settings area

Set the silder (AND CHECK BOXES look carefully) like this

(LOOK CLOSE AND MAKE SURE THE CHECKBOXES ARE ALSO THE SAME)

..... but with the following variations:

1. UNCHECK aircraft cast shadows on self

2. Water slider to 2xLOW

3. Texture res to 1m

AUTOGEN SLIDER TO VERY DENSE, not 100%

4. AIRLINE and GA traffic slider to -20- each

5. Cars to 10, boats and ships to 25

Rame Lock to UNLIMITED or 30... start with UNLIMITED

Click APPLY and close FSX

MAKE SURE the graphics settings are what I posted with the Nhancer settings...

Go here and scroll down because it shows images of the Nhancer settings as well as a list I posted (below the images) which may be easier for you to follow

http://www.simforums.com/forums/forum_p ... ?TID=25186

Open the FSX.cfg file in notepad (make SURE it is the config and not the TEXT file)

Make the following config changes ONLY after you set up the sliders and close FSX

[display]
WideViewAspect=True (if you use a wide screen montior)

[MAIN]
HideInfoText=1 <--- if you dont want the zoom and other info on the screen
DisablePreload=1 <----- a must to disable the preload of the default flight

Save and close the config

Boot FSX

USE KSEA as the benchmark flight... fly out 34L past Seattle, circle toward the Cascade Mts (right) and back to KSEA 34L

See how that does

Try dropping the AG slider in flight to 50%... and you may even try raising it to 100% because I found sometimes LOWER is not better

LAST... if you notice ground textures do not seem to be keeping up, try the following..

NOTE: you must CLOSE FSX before making these changes

Open the config file and change this to 70, save ... start FSX and see how it does

{display}
TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=70

Work that value... try 40, 50, 60, 70 and 80 if 70 does not help... if you do not get any differences or better results, set it to 30-40 and leave it.

The frame lock can vary from system to system... try UNLIMITED first but you can also experiment.... setting to 24 or even 30.

See if that helps

NOTE TO LURKERS.. The FSX SLIDER settings I gave above are for HIS hardware.. those will vary based on the system but the FSX.cfg file and driver settings are exactly the same for all.

no need to do that as it registers based on the rights of the install and runs the same

In VISTA make sure the following are done....

1. Turn off User Account Control

2. Turne off the Defender service.

3. Disabled Aero (saves CPU's to do so)

4. Disable the Indexing service

Install NOD32 as the security product.

hmmmmm..something to think about...another option ...to quit avg when the game is on?.....also ...something maybe embarassingly obvious....does one adjust the same resolution on the screen as in the game?...my screen is 1680x1050.....and or should i reduce the resolution on my screen to ease the strain?

Nick you're a genius.  I've made similar posts in other threads to help people, but always in prose - in fact I've never mastered screen shots as you have.  Therefore I have never been able to match your absolute logic and clarity.

Your explanation is clear and complete.

Maybe the moderators could post your post as a sticky, but with a different name than is there at the moment.  It needs to be something that catches the eye of the newcomer to save having the same question asked for what must be the 20th time.

"ARE YOU NEW TO FSX - READ THIS FIRST"

(and Yes Yancovitch, the resolutions should be the same.)

thanks nick.........framerates are stable now and not disappearing.....and that is without using nhancer, which is my next learning project....i'm slow, i'm slow......it still has the hiccups, but time and more reading will probably solve that....vic
