Modifying an Aircraft For SP2

Postby BFMF » Mon Feb 18, 2008 4:53 pm

I'm not completely sure if this goes here, or in the aircraft design boards, but if the mods feel that it needs to be moved, go ahead.... :)

Anyway, I've been slowly going through some older FS9 aircraft and trying them out in FSX/SP2. Today, I tried the Fairchild C-123 K "Provider" located at http://www.simviation.com/fs2004military121.htm. I was surprised that there weren't as many compatibility issues as I guessed. The windows look ok, and didn't see any weird transparancy issues

The gauges included in it weren't compatible, so I switched them all to default gauges. I know the insrument panel isn't perfect, realistic, or finished, but it's still a work in progress.

The first thing I needed to do was invert the alpha channell for the Props. That took care of the solid grey disk, but the propeller itself still looks horrid. Is it possible to improve it?

Also, another issue is that at night, the exterior lights work, but there are no Instrument panel lights in the Virtual cockpit. I'm not too familiar with lighting in FSX, but I checked the aircraft.cfg file, and VC lights are in the light section, but I'm not sure what to do to fix it.

For the prop, you hav inverted the Alpha Channel, which is good.
Now, the fact is that the part covering the blades is surely still too dark or clear (I don't remember what is transparent in SP2, black or white ?)... However, try decreasing the contrast, in order to bring the "prop" color closer to the transparency color.
And good job for the gauges.

I don't have SP2 but i'm gonna guess from what i think , it think white is transparent because black would make it opaque

It could be, however the technique was "inverted" when switching from SP1 to SP2, to in the end I do not remember how it was before, and how it is now :P

White is transparent although in most cases you will be much better off just to create a new texture for the prop , for the reason that most older files will never be comparable to the newer ones that we are used to seeing . also you can import a existing prop texture from another file and rename the file and it will for most files work fine without any modifacation. I have also recently found that for vista users that they can run in dx9 mode instead of dx10 preveiw mode and that will allow to use most fs9 crossovers without any issues
