FSX including FSX Steam version.

Uninstall  / Reinstall dilemma

Postby Hotshot » Wed Dec 05, 2007 7:42 am

I need to reinstall FSX. The Microsoft fs insider Support Alert, 'Files Removed on FSX Uninstall,'  says: "when uninstalling FSX, users will be asked  if they would like to remove their'save game' files ...if the user chooses to keep these files they will remain in the same location after FSX is uninstalled."

Great - but when I insert Disc 1  I don't get any choice: it's 'uninstall all files - yes/no.'  No option to save game files.  Same thing if I try Control Panel.

My question: does that option come up if I take the next step and click 'yes'?  If not, how do I find it?

:D  Just a guess but you could try a search.  That would work if you know the name of the files.

I've never uninstalled but I would try 'no' first and see if your presented with options for files to leave. You should be presented with at least a confirmation and an option to 'go back'. If things go awry.........

Saved flights, flight plans, saved missions and logbook are all saved in your ..\My Documents\Flight Simulator X Files\.. folder (in XP, Vista should be similar).

Make a backup of the folder before uninstall and you can always restore the files after install.

At that time [1909] the chief engineer was almost always the chief test pilot as well. That had the fortunate result of eliminating poor engineering early in aviation.

As Dave said make a back up of the files you want to save Just make sure you put them in a different folder then the orignal
Also you will have to run the reset tool before you can reinstall FSX

You do not need the Disc to uninstall, You can uninstall it in Panel control, the uninstall programs options ,you have to place the "Flight Simulator X Files"Folder in another place or change its name , If you want to save your CFG , go to C:/ documents and settings/YOUR NAME/ aplication Dta/ Microsoft/FSX <--Take this entire folder out of this place, later after reinstal is done put it back, as Flight Simulator X Files" in My document

is not a Big Dilema , you can install reinstall one millon times AS long is in the same PC , you can activate re-activate all the times you want, if you attempt to install it in other pc ,that's when the troubles comes..

Microsoft will not allow you to reinstall FSX without running what they call a reset program check out the link  8-)

My thanks to all of you. But if I could put in a word - my basic question is still unanswered! Where do I find the 'save game' option?

Play your wildcard, copy all of the contents of the FSX folder in 'My documents'. Namely, the Flight Simulator X Files folder and contents. This gives you saves and the logbook.bin Then go to the following folder path (Vista) to retrieve the current awards, will be slightly different for XP and in both cases you need 'show all system files and folders on in the control Panel......

C:\Users\User Name|AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX

User Name is whatever is in use on your machine, mine is steve
Make a copy of these and put them back after full reinstall, to retain your awards.

GrantedRewards.BIN
GrantedRewardsOld.BIN

Now, press any damn buttons, don`t make a difference what it does or doesn`t do  ;)
