Backing Up Addons?

Postby Bob70 » Fri Aug 10, 2007 8:38 pm

What I have been doing is backing up the Zip. files of the aircraft and scenery to a CD after I've downloaded them. To me that seems the easiest way. How is everyone else doing their backups? Should I be doing anything more. Thanks for any input.

I usually only backup my payware stuff and my .cfg's and logbook.  I quite doing backup on freeware a long time ago as it's relatively simple to download it again.  This comes back to haunt me sometimes, as when I had all of Roger Dial's Mustangs, and just about every texture in one folder, and then accidentally deleted it, but for the most part it saves me time and HD space...

Hi
i am basically new to computers and FS.  I have both FS9 and FSX and have both freeware and payware on both. I was thinking about getting an external hard drive on which to save both. Will that work, let say my computer crashed?  Would I be able to go to a new computer and just run FS off the hard drive?  Do files go to other folders on the computer? Would I be able to at least to salvage the add ons?
     Thanks

You would probably want to just save the important files on the external drive. Your config file and others are kept in other places on the drive so you wouldn't just be able to run the sims off the external drive unless you installed to that drive in the first place. What you can do is save folders like your simobjects/airplanes, effects, guages, add on scenery, rewards and saved flights to the external drive. This will save you time when reinstalling and keep your rewards and log book.

Also note that even an external drive will fail just like any hard drive. A quote about computers to live by: "All drives will fail it's just a matter of when". It's best to have irreplaceable or difficult to replace files on permanent media like a CD or DVD.
