FSX & VISTA

Postby SubZer0 » Sat Jun 30, 2007 9:16 pm

I was just thinking of getting vista. But I'm not so sure how it will run FSX. What experiences have you guys had with it? Decrease/Increase frame rates or smoothness? Should I get it or should I not?

Also, which version of Vista is better? x86? 32bit or 64bit?

well, from what i've heard from people running 8800s with Vista, they say that Vista doesnt take down that many frames.  about 2-3 frames are taken away from XP's framerate.

as for 32bit or 64bit, that depends on ur choice, and what ur processor actually supports.

btw, x86 is 32bit, so the only choice u hav is x86 or x64.

FS Water Configurator+ has new modifications in the works, plus DirectX 10, Service Pack
1, and Radeon HD 3+ Series support.

I have the Vista Home Premium which is x86.  If there is a difference in framerates with an 8800GTX card I find it hard to pick.

However, I have suffered from the Out of Memory problem - I have 4 gigs of Corsair 800mhz RAM installed and had to apply the fix you will find in Miltestpilots thread on the topic.  It works well.

I installed Vista for the DX10 functionality.  Now the patch isn't due till the end of this calendar year
there is no rush to change unless there are other features of Vista that you want.

Touch everything but I have FSX running really well on Vista using a matrox three screen setup.

Did you do a clean install or did you "upgrade to Vista" directly from XP? And by how much did it improve it?

I know you asked G the question.  But I had heard of horror stories about the upgrade so I went for the clean install.   The tech backed everything up onto his own server then reinstalled after the OS was installed.

Well from what I've been reading it seems like some people do get benefits and some don't. Keep these posts coming to give me some more opinions from which to make my decision.

I think the crunch will come when the DX10 patch is released.  DX10 is bundled with Vista.  So that's when you will need to make the decision.

You can bet your life the forums will be full of comment as to whether DX10 is better, worse, or even sufficiently better to make it worth the effort.  Watch this and every other forum.

I've seen many reports that Vista can add a frame or drop a frame... but overall it's slightly smoother on Vista. I would stick with XP though.

I did the upgrade first, but reinstalled the other day with a clean install.

I clean instaled Vista 64, now I have most of my games reinstalled on it and my speculations were wrong. I thought it was going to be a gaming nightmare on he 64 bit version but it's not. I play BF2, BF2142, GuildWars, PE, ArmA, Call of Juarez. All on max settings with little to no loss in performance. I did however ditch my 3700 San Diego for a dual core Opteron 180 and 2 gigs of ram to be safe for it though. I still have not gotten into using all of Vistas new features etc. I like a clean OS so that dam sidebar with gadget thing has been turned off since hour 1. but it feels a lot better to see it than XP and it is so much more organized. The only beef I have with it is all of it's useless security features, yes it has a good spyware scan etc but it gives you errors like "Windows has blocked(in other words deleted) this file for your safety" its like I own the damn computer I will decided what I open. It also will ask you about 10 times if you want to do something. It's like do you want to do this? Yes You sure? Yes Really Sure? YES Windows Has blocked this file for your saftey, press OK to continue. AHHHHH!

I just got a god deal on a copy of VISTA Home premium (retail- full ) and will try dual booting first.
I initially want to familurize myself with VISTA before the FSX DX10 patch is released.

Also, I'm still running a year and a half old ATA x1800xt that still runs FSX surprisingly well coupled with a core duo 6600. However, I will get a top end DX10 card this fall. So, when the DX10 patch is released, I will be all set.

Most all of us wiil get VISTA sooner or later, so why wait until the last minute?

I have turned UAC off, and Defender off (I have Norton 360) and therefore have got rid of those horrible messages and blocked and deleted files.  Norton, which I know gets something of a bad press for its resource demand keeps me clear of viruses, trojans, phishers and others (so far, cross fingers).

I also turned Aero off mainly because it is a pretty gimmick, but otherwise irritating and not compatible with some games.

But it has much improved features that do make it worthwhile.

I did turn UAC off, I still get the "Are you sure" messages. I have used Norton for years, yes people don't like it because it eats recources, is very hard to uninstall but for no sht protection nothing beats it.
