A few random jet flying questions:

Flying a hornet, I don't have rudder pedals, and I try to do a high g turn...i roll the wings, and pull back on the stick (like back and to the left....back and to the left....back and to the left...you must conclude there was more than one shooter....opps...uh, sorry, just saw JFK the other night again....), but that just makes me go up too, not just in a tight turn...is there a way to compensate for that?  On other sims, that is all I needed to do, and I know that I must be missing something cause this is more real than I am used to, so is it the pedals that would help?

I love Air Force One...I must have about 50 screenies of it (now, if I can figure out how to resize it to upload here....), and I am "taking the President" from O'Hare to St. Maarten.

ok, color me stupid...figured out why i was going slow....had the flaps at one...didn't even see that...oh my...:(

Anyone have any tips on how to spot an airport at night?  I tried landing last nght at Princess Julianna on 27 and by the time I spotted the runway, I was too high (6 miles, 2000 ft) and too fast (210).

I guess this all comes with practice, but it is a bit frustrating at the beginning...

I've not flown combat jets in FS yet, been flying in LOMAC and other combat sims for a long time though.

If you are wings level, roll 90 and pull back on the stick, you should descend a little when doing it. I compensate by rolling between 87-90 degs in a slightly nose up angle (depending on speed) and you should turn level.

If you're climbing whilst turning, I would suggest either you trim is off, or you have slight rudder input, or you are not at a 90 degree angle.

I used to find the problem was with my stick. I have a logitec freedom wireless stick with twist control for rudder. I found that when in tight turns, i was inadvertantly twisting the stick too, which was giving me ruddder input, pushing the jet either up or down.

With my new stick (HOTAS Cougar), I don't get this as I have no rudder pedals and use a dial on the throttle control for rudder - see this post for pics:

So in summary, I would think that it's either:
Not rolling at exactly 90 degs
Rudder input from somewhere
Trim is set off somewhere

Can you show a screenshot of your MFD's and HUD and it might give a clue.

Generally 2000 ft/min is a good rate for climb/descent (in aircraft that can manage it). I seem to want to think that the autopilot usually defaults to 1800 ft/min, which is perfectly fine.

As for finding the field, in the real world you'd be receiving vectors to the runway and/or keeping track of it yourself by GPS. Both of these are of course an option in FS. Visually finding a small poorly lit runway on a small poorly lit island at night in the middle of the Caribbean sea is a good trick. But if you don't see it until you're 6mi 2000ft and 210 kts, then intercept downwind and fly a visual pattern for the runway. Just make sure you make your pattern towards/over the water, to keep away from those poorly light hills.  :o

Thanks...will give that a try...i don't have a twist, so that is out, but I might not be rolling 90....

Check your trim settings, although if in level flight you are not yawing left or right, I'd say it's ok.

As for finding airports at night most airports have a rotating light green on one side and white on the other. In the real world airports without control towers will have runway lights but you have to tune your radio to a specific frequency and then key the mike to activate the lights. The lights will turn off by them selves after a given time. I do not think this is the case IN FS but you should be able to see the rotating light from a good distance away. 8-)

Figured out why I couldn't see the airport....they were landing me on 27, which brings you in over a frackin mountain!  Of course I couldn't see it!  :)
