Using in-game AF (anisotropic filtering) is always better than forcing AF in Driver Control Panel. It's always faster and gives virtually the same image quality, because game developers know exactly which surfaces need anisotropic filtering and which don't. It allows the GPU to save the precious resources and achieve better gameplay. Use in-game AF in Microsoft's Flight Simulator X to achieve better image quality.

Any thoughts on this?

Btw, their recommended settings are garbage. I get nowhere near the performance I get now after this thread compared to their 'suggested settings'. LoL...Maxed out water and sparse scenery/autogen.

All I can say is that I followed NickN's recomendation and improved my performance enormously.  I have trilinear set in the game, and anistropic 8x (he suggests 16x) on the card:  also I have found AA 2x on the card not the game works better.  By the way Nvidia x8800.  The MS recommendations should only be taken with a stiff drink.

Different subject.  I am sure that all of you are too smart to be as dumb as me.  Remember in Vista it is recommended that VRAM, or the paging file, or swap file as it is variously known can be set for a minimum of the effective RAM (less than installed, you can find it on your control panel quickly enough) +300 and a maximum of 3 times that installed amount.  Once I woke up to this performance not just jumped it catapulted with microstutters and hitches almost removed.  Obviously slider settings are vital, and also the trees/building ratio in the cfg file is fundamental.  But a vast improvement.

Last point may be hardware, but does anyone know of a make of flash drive that is all 'fast' and in 4gigs plus size to use as Readyboost which is faster than the VRAM on the mechanical drive??

FSX is like a balloon, poke your finger in one side and it bulges out the other.  It's never right.

LOL!!

Thoughts?

Yea, I have a thought...

oh gezus that dammn software is going to show where we screwed up on the core and the shader engine so lets post the settings with the slider values that will help hide the problem

I don't know why everyone recommends that site for tweaking NVidia cards.

Those settings make FSX look absolutely horrible.

Interest in this thread has dropped off as we await SP1 in the next few days.  Moderators is the number of views of this thread a record?  It has certainly been the singly most useful thread that I have ever followed.  Maybe you should elevate NickN, Miltestpilot and one or two others to the rank of Guru.

I'm no guru. I just pulled the bannanas out of my ears and listened for a change, then repeated what I learned

I am not a guru either, I just know how to test and observe

I hate say it since the thread has been sort of a tradition over the last few months, I think it is time to let it slide into SimV oblivion.

With SP1 I have a feeling everything is going to change, especially those on dual core systems.

As I stated previously, our multi-core support will take advantage of both 2 and 4 cores today, and more cores in the future when they become available. And this is for both AMD and Intel.

As to how much of a boost, we are still being conservative with the 20% across the board number, but we are seeing some scenarios on better hw hit up to 40% improvement. It really depends on your rig, on your settings, and on your actual flight.

And thats before we talk to the scenery content fixes, the airplane and gauge/panel fixes, the back-compat bug fixes, the 3 AI aircraft fixes, the multiplayer fixes ( griefer bug, partial fix for the connection to Gamespy issue ) and the SDK+SimConnect fixes.

SP1 is chock full of goodness. And is still on target for later this week. Stay tuned!

Sic transit gloria mundi  -  but thank you all for the guidance and the help.  Mr Moderator kindly make this thread a sticky but close it.  I suspect there will be a new super thread, SP1 and Us.
